Chapter 30 - Wraith’s Whisper

I tried swinging my body to fall down, but whatever substance they used to tie us was quite strong.

Use your head for this, gather your spirit energy and use it to melt these.

I closed my eyes and tried to gather the energy. At first, it was like water coming from a tap, but it was becoming bigger. The tap became a well, then a lake, then a river, and then a vast sea. The gush was alone enough to melt it away. I gathered the energy towards my fingertips and released it. It worked like a laser. I fell pretty badly to the ground.

After managing to get up, I rushed towards the second team and carefully placed them on the ground. Then, I placed my team on the ground. "It could be the work of some low-level wraiths, maybe someone of higher level," I said.

You are right, this level of casting needs someone of higher level.

I tried to wake them, but as Fulminor said, I couldn't.

"You are a unique one, aren't you?" I turned back and saw him, a human. His clothes indicated he was some kind of millionaire. "You made it out of my casting. How? What kind of dream was it for you to easily wake from it? Wasn't it scary enough?"

"He is not normal; he is a human under the influence of a wraith," Fulminor said.

"You holders are always a pain in the neck. Let's get it over with. Kill him and bring me his body." The wraiths were hiding in his shadow. They came after me, and I tried to summon my sword, but it was futile. I ran across the building, and they were right behind me. One of them jumped on me and pinned me to the ground. He scratched me with his hands, but I pushed him back. As we were near a railing, he fell from there to the ground but was not dead. The others were still behind me.

I bolted through the deserted corridors of the abandoned shopping mall, my footsteps echoing off the cracked tiles. The wraiths were right behind me, their eerie whispers growing louder with each step. I could feel their cold presence nipping at my heels. I glanced back briefly, just in time to see one of them leap towards me. I ducked, narrowly avoiding its grasp, and kept running.

"Fulminor, I need my sword!" I shouted, but there was no response. Panic surged through me, but I couldn't afford to slow down. I dashed through a broken doorway and found myself in what used to be a bustling food court. Now, it was a wasteland of overturned tables and shattered glass. The shadows seemed to stretch and twist, hiding the wraiths as they pursued me.

I spotted an escalator leading to the upper level and sprinted towards it. My legs burned with the effort, but I pushed on, taking the steps two at a time. The wraiths were relentless, their forms flickering in and out of the shadows. One of them lunged at me, its claws grazing my arm. I winced but didn't stop.

Reaching the top, I looked around frantically for an escape route. There, across the atrium, was a skylight. If I could just make it there… I ran, the metal grating beneath my feet clanging loudly. The wraiths were closing in, their whispers now a cacophony of threats.

One of them jumped onto the walkway, blocking my path. I skidded to a halt, my mind racing. With no other option, I charged at it, using my momentum to knock it off balance. It tumbled over the edge, but the others were still coming. I reached the skylight and smashed it open with my elbow, shards of glass raining down.

Without hesitation, I climbed through and dropped to the ground below, landing hard but rolling to absorb the impact. I scrambled to my feet and kept running, the wraiths pouring out of the building behind me. I could see the edge of the parking lot up ahead. If I could just reach it, I might have a chance to lose them in the maze of abandoned cars.

I pushed myself harder, my breath coming in ragged gasps. The wraiths were relentless, but so was I. As I reached the parking lot, I glanced back one last time. They were still there, but I had gained some distance. I ducked behind a rusted van, the shadows swallowing me up as I disappeared into the night.

As I crouched behind the rusted van, trying to catch my breath, I could hear the wraiths searching for me. Their whispers echoed through the empty parking lot, sending chills down my spine. I knew I couldn't stay hidden for long; they would find me eventually.

"Fulminor, I need your help," I whispered, hoping for a response.

Stay calm, Rudra. Use the shadows to your advantage. You need to find a way to turn the tables on them.

I peeked out from behind the van and saw the wraiths spreading out, their dark forms moving silently among the abandoned cars. I needed a plan. My eyes scanned the area, and I noticed a maintenance shed at the far end of the lot. If I could reach it, I might find something useful.

Keeping low, I moved from car to car, staying in the shadows. The wraiths were getting closer, but I managed to stay out of sight. Finally, I reached the shed and slipped inside. It was dark and cluttered with old tools and equipment. I rummaged through the shelves, looking for anything that could help.

My fingers closed around a flare gun. It wasn't much, but it was better than nothing. I loaded a flare and took a deep breath. "Fulminor, guide my aim," I whispered.

I stepped out of the shed and aimed the flare gun at the nearest wraith. The flare shot out with a bright burst of light, striking the wraith and causing it to shriek in pain. The other wraiths turned towards me, their eyes glowing with anger.

I fired another flare, hitting a second wraith. The light seemed to weaken them, giving me a chance to fight back. I kept firing, each flare lighting up the night and driving the wraiths back. But I was running out of flares, and the wraiths were still coming.

Just as I was about to fire my last flare, I felt a surge of energy within me. Fulminor's presence grew stronger, and I knew what I had to do. I closed my eyes and focused, gathering my spirit energy once more. This time, it flowed through me like a raging river, powerful and unstoppable.

I opened my eyes and released the energy, sending a wave of light towards the wraiths. They screamed and dissolved into shadows, unable to withstand the force. When the light faded, the parking lot was silent. The wraiths were gone.
