Chapter 23 - First Fight

Mephits were G ranked monsters and would always travel in groups, there were currently three of them in front of me right now and one of them was wielding a spear which had the body of a horned rabbit on one end.

If one was to describe a Mephit, the best way to put it would be 'A goblin with wings.' A stereotypical goblin was a semi humanoid creature of short stature, usually with rough or scaly skin and long protruding noses and large horns. If one was to add bat like wings to that description, they would be Mephits.

The one's ahead of me had green colored skin with yellow eyes. Their wings allowed them to fly slightly above land and made them faster than goblins but also weaker.

They were fighting over the horned rabbit and had their sharp teeth exposed as saliva dripped onto the floor from their open mouths. Looking at them I felt some fear as I never expected to see one of these creatures in real life, let alone try to fight them but I had to control it, if I was afraid of the lowest tier of monsters than I might as well give up on being an awakened.

They hadn't noticed me as I stood behind rocks only a few meters away from them, the Dark magic I had attempted to hide myself with, formed a thin veil over my body that barely did anything and didn't even cover my entire body as most of it was still exposed.

Sighing I retracted it, I didn't know what I expected for my first attempt at an advanced technique with my poor mana control. I wished I had more time to train, I hadn't even learned how to properly imbue my weapon with mana.

There was no point in wishing, I had to kill them with what I had, fleeing was a bad option, I was faster but if they called more Mephits, I was doomed. I clutched my knife in my right hand and grabbed two rocks with the other as I came up with a crude battle plan.

I used an underhanded throw to create some noise behind a boulder close to one of the Mephits. The clattering distracted one of them as he greedily flew over to investigate the boulder as the other two continued fighting over the horned rabbit.

'Here we go.'

I then planted my feet on the ground, and using my left hand threw the other rock with as much force as I could, imbuing it with wind mana for greater velocity towards the Mephit's head.

The Mephit looked in my direction due to the sound I had made while throwing but it was too late. The rock hit it hard right between the eyes, causing it to stagger and fall backwards as yellow blood began pouring from its forehead.

This was my opportunity, I shot towards the lone Mephit as fast as I could with my knife readied in hand and when I was in range, I made two successive diagonal cuts with its thin neck as the point of intersection in the arcs of the cuts.

*THUD*

The lizard like head of the Mephit was detached and fell on to the floor causing yellow blood and viscera to gush out of its neck, spreading all over the surrounding including my clothes before the headless body twitched and fell backwards.

"YAAAA!"

The other two Mephits were alerted by the sounds and smelled the blood of their comrade and flew quickly towards the boulder. I stomped onto the boulder with all my strength, leaving an indent as I shot upwards towards one of the Mephits.

I grabbed onto one of the horns of the first Mephit with my left hand and used my momentum to bring my dagger down towards its right eye.

*SQUELCH*

My dagger pierced into the eye of the Mephit as it yelled in pain and attempted to knock me off, but before it could swipe at me, I pulled myself up and jumped off its head towards the last one with the spear.

The last Mephit had tried to attack me with its spear while I was attacking the last one but missed me entirely and instead the spear went straight through the skull of its comrade killing it instantly.

However, it reacted fast enough to pull the spear out and fly backwards, preventing me from being able to grab it but as I was falling, I got hold of the spear it was wielding and yanked it towards me with great force.

It let go of the spear a bit too late and I was able to pull it towards me slightly and slash at its torso before I fell to the ground, as it flew backwards to escape the limited range of my dagger.

"RAAAAAAAAAA!"

It yelled in a mix of anger and pain as a gash had appeared on its chest that leaked yellow blood and I used the body of its fallen comrade to soften my fall.

It had distanced itself and its wings began fluttering wildly as if he was preparing to charge at me. It was angry, I could use this to my advantage, I picked up the spear it had dropped in my left hand and readied myself to face its charge.

The lone Mephit released a war cry as it charged towards me at an incredibly fast speed. However, it moved in a straight line, and I threw the spear at it while it was charging at me.

It came to a sudden halt and tilted its body to the left, narrowly avoiding the spear as it grazed the creatures wing but that's what I was hoping for. I bolted towards it, raising my dagger above my head and by the time it noticed what it had done wrong I was already in range.

I brought my dagger down, pouring as much mana I could into one strike for a powerful overhead slash at the creature. The daggers trail turned black as it cut through the skull of the creature with ease and continued with little to no resistance.

The last Mephit couldn't even release a sound as its body was bisected by the slash, causing the inner organs of the creature and a great amount of yellow blood to come pouring out of both halves as I flicked my dagger to remove some of the blood accumulated on it.

I had won but I had lost my calm and rationality, the last strike was far too excessive and just caused an unnecessary mess. I stepped back as I let out heavy strained breaths due to the stress that I had put my body under.

Looking around at the gruesome scene of the corpses of The Mephits, I felt no guilt, only disgust and disappointment in myself for the way I had acted but I also believed that I had at the end imbued my weapon with pure dark mana. Something I should practice if I get out of here.

There didn't seem to be any other monsters in the surrounding area, so after taking a moment to catch my breath and wiping some of the blood of my clothes, I began heading towards the tallest spire once again.
