Chapter 16 - Chapter 15 - Skill Points

"... For a villain, becoming powerful is not a fate or an option, but a duty."

Kaito thinks about this sentence from the moment he hears the voice of the Skill Use Guide utter it. And when he kills the second goblin, he finally understands it.

This sentence is absolutely correct, and Kaito knows that because he has the villain class, he has no choice but to become better and stronger than everyone else, or one day the hero will surely kill him. Besides, now that Kaito has the opportunity to almost live a new life, dying is the last thing he wants.

As he makes his way through the dungeon, the claustrophobic atmosphere becomes more and more suffocating and his heart begins to beat faster. This is how he knows that danger is near. This is a feeling of almost agonizing fear, and a chill that he feels grows more and more intense. And when he finally comes to the entrance of a corridor that is completely different from the others, covered with bricks, he knows that he is coming to the right place.

The blood trails have brought him to this place, so there is no doubt that his group mates have been brought here.

Kaito's heart was already racing, but it quickened even more when he noticed the figure of an upper goblin near the entrance to this corridor.

Immediately, Kaito hides behind one of the pillars right behind it.

Cold sweat runs down his forehead as he spies this transcendent, but it does not move like the other smaller, patrolling goblins. On the contrary, this superior goblin is standing still, guarding this entrance. This must be the path that leads to the shaman goblin.

'If I want to get into the hall, I'll have to get past this guy, and I'll have to do it quietly so as not to attract more enemies.'

Trying to keep his breathing in control and with tense muscles, Kaito thinks about what he can do. He knows that his fate depends on his skills and especially on his courage.

There are few options left, but as a vampire, he can afford to risk a little more than a normal human. The big problem is that Kaito has to shoot down the enemy without them screaming for help, and that is a huge obstacle. So, knowing how to deal with the situation, an idea comes to him.

Looking around for a rock that is big enough to make a considerable noise, but not so big that it won't make a bang. Fortunately, he finds one easily under his left foot, so he slowly bends down and carefully holds it. It is perfect. The next step is to analyze his surroundings to find a strategic point from which to throw it. His goal is to make a noise loud enough to attract the attention of the upper goblin, distract it from its current position, and draw it closer.

Kaito then throws the stone in the opposite direction from his position in the corridor, causing it to hit a wall some distance away with a distinctive sound.

The goblin turns his head, alarmed by the sound, and begins to approach where the sound came from to see what or who it is. Even though he is sure it is just an ordinary, small, stupid, insignificant goblin, he needs to be sure.

Taking advantage of the distraction as the top goblin passes by his side, Kaito moves quickly through the shadows.

As he learned from his last attempt at stealth slaughter, this time he moves quickly and with doubled caution. His sharp fangs ready for action, he leaps onto the upper goblin's back, wraps his arms around him, and seals his lips around his enemy's neck.

Confused, the top goblin instinctively tries to pull back the one grabbing him, and when he feels the bite, he screams. But his voice does not come out. As warned, Kaito is someone who learns from his mistakes as well as his successes. When he jumped up and grabbed the top goblin from behind, he made sure to cut its throat and thus its vocal cords.

The attack was perfect, and it doesn't take long for the goblin's life force to slowly drain away while the vampire remains hidden from the eyes of the one he is killing.

The goblin struggles for a moment but soon succumbs to the weakness caused by the vampire's attack. His body falls limply to the ground.

[You have killed a Superior Goblin, you have gained +1000 XP].

[You have leveled up!]

[You gained Skill Points (+10).]

Kaito would like to have time to be surprised that he has finally gained a level, but just as he jumps off the upper goblin's back and hears the thud of the corpse falling to the ground, he also hears the sound of a heavy stomp on the door of the brick hallway. Kaito's head slowly turns to the right and he sees an upper goblin coming out of the passageway ahead of him.

The goblin is scratching its belly awkwardly. "Yaaaw!" The transcendent yawns loudly and then looks at Kaito.

For the first few moments, the second upper goblin looks confused, a little sleepy to say the least. Finally, he looks at his brother lying on the ground, dead, and then his eyes fall on Kaito's fangs, dripping blood. It takes him a few more moments to process the situation with his pea brain, and Kaito doesn't react either, because he doesn't know what mistake he made.

'I did everything right. I acted cautiously and shot the goblin perfectly. So where did this other goblin come from?' Kaito thinks as he watches the new enemy's expression change.

The answer to the questions going through Kaito's mind at that moment is simple: he just wasn't lucky enough.

'Quick! I have to act quickly! I can't just stand here,' Kaito shouts to himself.

Kaito's fingers move quickly, not to wield his dagger, but to quickly use the skill points he gained a few seconds ago. He knows that he cannot afford to wait to use them later, after all, there might not be an after if he has to face a superior goblin.

Unfortunately, Kaito doesn't have much time to think about how to distribute the points this time.

Then the superior goblin starts running towards him, gnashing its teeth in anger.

The creature reaches Kaito in the blink of an eye and tries to grab him.

This causes the boy to have flashbacks of when he lost his arm. So he dodges it without hesitation and throws his body backwards with one hand in a not very elegant somersault. Still, he falls upside down, hitting his back on the same pillar he was hiding on, and manages to escape the onslaught of the Transcendent.

Then, at that moment, the following conclusion crosses his mind:

'My body is much... much lighter!'
