Chapter 2 - Going Away

POV DIANA ROSS

"She's the one I told you about". Madame Rosslyn said referring to Diana Ross.

Based on her looks, you could notice her light blonde hair held in a bun and her mystique blue eyes drawing you into their mysteries although wrapped in white plain dress, you could still see true beauty emitting from them.

Madame Rosslyn addresses Lady Chatterley Wundt, based on her looks and dress, she obviously belongs to high society.

"Well looks deceive most of the time" Diana thought inwardly.

Madame Rosslyn knew about Diana's unfortunate situation, she asked her to come meet with someone who could help her get a job with a great return.

The woman assess Diana from head to toe and concluded," you are right, she seems eminently suitable for the job". Then she gestures the two to sit opposite her.

The woman introduces herself as Lady Chatterley Wundt probably she's in her late thirties.

She discuss her offer over tea with Diana and Madame Rosslyn.

Her jaw dropped on hearing how good Lady Chatterley's offer was.

Then she asks,"My Lady, please what's the job about, I hope it is something within my strength?"

Lady Chatterley smiles and discuss the task Diana needed to do to close the deal.

"My Lady, it's an honour to serve the Wundt's but to be the personal maid to the only heir of the Wundt's is a more tasking job for a person of my status, I therefore beg of your reconsideration". Diana spoke out of confusion and humility.

"As I earlier stated, you are eminently suitable for the job, and all the qualities you posses matches the requirements provided by the young Lord" Lady Chatterley replied.

Diana looked at Madame Rosslyn with a troubled look.

Madame Rosslyn understanding her gaze sighed softly and said" My Lady, we appreciate your kind gesture but, are there other options?".

Lady Chatterley looks intently at Diana, understanding her plight replies," I wish there was something better but believe me, this is the best offer I can get you".

.....

Although I was considering refusing to take the job offer, but getting home and welcomed by my mother who's situation deteriorate as the day goes by made me reconsider.

Mother was declared blind due to eye ageing disease, I can clearly remember when the doctor declared her blind.

In tears I only catched a glimpse of what the doctor said I can recall him mentioning the word glaucoma.

"is their anything else we can do even if it has to do with operating the eyes?" I asked him hoping to get a favorable reply.

"Ma'am it's unoperable, am sorry there's nothing we can do" he replied.

And so it was that I became the breadwinner of the family. Before the incident occurred, I always asked Mom about our relatives if any and she would always weep at last I stopped asking as soon as I realized she wasn't going to tell me rather, it's was a puzzle I had to solve on my own.

I looked at our little cottage, it's needed more straw besides winter fall was close by.

So I set out to get more straws, water reeds and also restock the woods.

Dusk was drawing near so I rushed back home, hurriedly made dinner and we sat down to eat.

"Hope you are enjoying your meal?" I asked smiling.

Following the sound of my voice, smiling she replied,"you're the best cook in the world my child". I smiled back.

Such was the way of our conversation, little words carrying great emotional meanings which we understood.

"Mother there's something I wish to speak to you about", I said with a serious tone, changing the topic.

"What is it my child?" She asked, sensing the seriousness of the issue I was about to say.

"I got the job offer I told you about but it requires me to stay away from home for a very long time." I said.

I could sense the temperature of the room rising as Mother was silent.

"It's a good pay, and I've made arrangements with Lucy she would attend to you when am away", I continued.

"Diana dear, what can I do without you? I want you to promise me you'll always be safe" , she said. You might not know it but I've lived my whole life with mother and anytime she calls my full name it means that she was going to cry as a result of her being unhappy with her condition.

"I promise mother I will always be safe", I assured her.

"When will you be leaving?", She asked.

"Probably next week mother", I replied.
