Chapter 2 - Chapter 1: The Day Before I Died

The day starts off like any other day, the sun was shining into a small room with a young girl sleeping in the bed. Sounds of dogs barking, birds chirping and the pitter patter of children's feet filled the air. The building that this bedroom was located in was an Orphanage and the pitter patter of feet came from the small children who lost their parents at a young age. The Children who lived in this place were waiting for the day to come where they would be adopted into a new family or to come to the age to be able to move out and strike it out on their own.

A sound of a door knob turning and the door opening woke the young girl out of her slumber. "Amara are you up?" A voice of a little girl says. The young girl who's name was Amara sits up in the bed and smiles over at the adorable little girl who has only her head inside of the room. "Yes Sarah I am, give me a moment to get ready and I'll be down to get breakfast." Amara replied as she gave her a loving smile. Amara quickly got up fixed the bed, got dressed and fixed her hair before going out into the hallway. Instead of turning towards the dining room Amara turned and rushed towards the bathroom. Several minutes later Amara comes out of the bathroom and heads to the dining room.

"Amara sit here! Sit here!" I see Sarah gleefully patting the chair beside her. I smile at the adorable 5 year old girl and walk to her. "Good morning everyone" I happily say to everybody in the dining room. I pull the chair that Sarah wanted me to sit in and sat down. I was answered with a barrage of good mornings from all the little children. I laughed and then the director of the Orphanage came in with a smile on his face. Everyone turned their heads in his direction when he came into the room. I got up and slightly bowed to him as I said "Good morning Director Smith." The rest of the kids called him Pa but seeing as I was the oldest of the group at the tender age of 15 I called him by his title. "Good morning everyone" he replied with a smile still on his face.

Everyone sat back down and Director Smith walked to his chair at the head of the table and sat down. "Eat up everyone, you don't want to be late to school." The director said with a little laughter in his voice. I turned to Sarah and helped her with her food only because she was the youngest of the group for now. Sarah ate her food as I helped the other young kids with cutting their food to more manageable bites. After I was done I sat back down and ate as quickly as possible without making a mess.

Once I was finished eating I stood back up and started clearing the table of empty plates and silverware. " Amara just leave it. I will clean it up you need to hurry up and get to school. You work to hard sometimes I swear you are an adult stuck in a child's body. Please go out and enjoy yourself and enjoy life." Director Smith said to me as he put his hand on my shoulder and smiled at me. I smiled back at him and took the dishes already in my hands to the kitchen sink. I then turned around and replied with a cheerful "Don't worry about it. I enjoy taking care of the kids and helping around, after everything that you have done to help all of us, it is the least I can do to pay you back.". After saying that I ran to the front door and hurried to put shoes on and get to school.

Right when I got to my desk in class the bell rung to let kids know that school has started. I sighed in relief thanking the gods that I made it right before the bell rung. My desk is at the far back right side of the class right next to a window. I looked out the window as class stared and smiled to myself. "Amara Reynolds" the teacher said and I immediately stopped smiling to myself, put a straight cold face looked at the teacher and replied with a cold "Here". The teacher called a few more names and when seeing that everyone was present she started with our lesson.

After a few hours of sitting there quietly with my notebook out and taking notes. I didn't pay attention to any noise going on around me and just focused on the teachers that switched out for every subject. So I didn't notice the time going by so fast. All of a sudden a student boy in front of me who was not paying attention to any of the classes stood up and looked out the window and groaned. So I turned my head and looked out the window and saw that it was pouring outside. Then all of a sudden it was my turn to groan. That surprised the boy in front of me, he has never heard me express any kind of emotion other then my usual cold attitude. This time he heard clear frustration coming from me. "Gotta walk home?" He asked. I nodded and sighed. Then I turned to my desk and started gathering up my things and putting them in my bag. A couple seconds after I closed my bag the bell for the day rang, so I picked up my bag and walked out of class with out even looking back to be excused from class to go home.

Right as I got to the stairs to go down the first floor the teachers finally decided to let the kids out. I continued down the stairs and then heard the same boy who sat in front of me call out to me. I stopped and turned to look at him. "Do you need anything" I asked coldly. He smiled at me with out shying away like everyone normally does when I talk to them. "I was wondering if you needed an umbrella?" He asked me. I silently just looked at him for a moment and then replied with a question "Why?". He looked a little puzzled by my question. His mouth opened and then closed for a couple of seconds and then it looked like he figured out why I asked him why. "Well I accidentally brought an umbrella when I already had one in my locker. So I figured you needed one also when I heard you groan also." He finished that sentence with a light chuckle. I shook my head "No I have one in my locker also. I just wasn't expecting rain today.". After saying that I turned away from him and started walking away but not without saying a quick goodbye to the boy.

I quickly got to my locker and took my umbrella out. Before I turned away and closed my locker I made sure that I didn't need anything else from it when I saw that there was nothing else I needed I closed it and walked to the front door. I looked around and waited for there to be enough space for me to open my umbrella and start walking back to the Orphanage. After a couple more minutes of waiting I was able to have enough space and time to open my umbrella.

Once I got about half way back to the Orphanage I started to feel like I was being watched so I stopped and took a quick look around and didn't see any one looking at me, I then started walking a little more quickly. As soon as I started walking again I felt like I was being watched again. So I started running and then I ran into the gas station that was right in front of me. After getting inside I quickly walked to a spot in the store that would keep me out of sight of whoever was watching me.

I stayed there for a few minutes longer, once I was calm enough to think clearly I went to the cashier I asked them if I could use their phone. When they handed me the store phone I thanked them and immediately called Director Smith. "Hello?" I hear from the other line and my racing heart slows down a little bit. "Director Smith, its me Amara.". "Amara, are you okay? You sound a little scared." He sounded worried when he asked me that question. " I am a little scared only because while I was walking home I could feel someone watching me and im only half way back to the Orphanage. I thought I'd call you and see if you could come get me." I nervously ask the director. I could hear movement on the other side of the line and then I heard him say "I am on my way, do not leave where you are. I'll be there in 5 minutes.". I sighed in relief and thanked him. We hung up after that and I handed the phone back to the cashier and thanked him. I turned around and stayed at the register and waited for Director Smith to get there.

I looked outside and saw a hooded silhouette of a person across the street looking right at the building i was in without moving. My heart beat picked up and my breathing became slightly shallow from the fear rising up in my chest. I turned my head and looked at the cashier. " sir? Do you see that person across the street?" I asked with obvious fear in my voice. The man looks over to where I was staring and shakes his head. " there's nobody out there ma'am, are you alright?" He asked me. My head snaps back to where I saw the hooded person only to find them gone. My hands started shaking but I forced myself to fake a smile and say nevermind to the man and just continue waiting.

What felt like hours, Director Smith finally shows up and briskly walks into the gas station and starts looking for me. " I'm over here, thank you for picking me up." I say loud enough for Director Smith to hear me and it was just loud enough for him to hear the obvious fear in my voice. His head snaps to me and he jogs up to me and puts his hands on my shoulders. His eyes scan every part of me to make sure I am not hurt. "Whats going on? Are you okay? You look and sound even more terrified then you were over the phone Amara." He asks me with obvious worry etched all over his face. I look at him and whisper just loud enough for Director Smith to hear me "I was being watched by some person in a hooded coat. They were right across the street watching me up till a couple minutes ago when they all of a sudden disappeared. The feeling of being watched was the exact same as when I was walking home from school. So I ran here and immediately called you. Im really scared." He hugs me and whispers back in my ear "I am so glad that you are okay, let's get home as quickly as possible. Don't look around just look straight at the car when we leave the building. Do you understand me?" I nod and he stops hugging me and takes my hand. Director Smith looks over at the cashier and thanks him and quickly pulls me out of the building and straight to the car. I keep my eyes forward and quickly get into the car and lock my door right when it was closed behind me. I watched as Director Smith went around the front of the car and get to his door. All of a sudden he stops and I can see his shoulders move left to right and then I see him open the car door and get in. I sigh in relief and smile at the Director. He smiles back, starts the car and then pulls out of the parking spot. Finally we are going back home I thought to myself.
