As Lan Bingwen pointed out, Lin wasn't particularly keen on joining a sect with overly complex interpersonal dynamics. Given his identity as the Human Emperor of the Barren Wilderness, doing so would undoubtedly invite an enormous amount of trouble.
Having the strength of a Human Immortal placed him in the middle of the pack within an Immortal Sect, and there were certainly many more powerful than him.
