Chapter 1 - Burning City (1)

As chaos engulfed the city, more than 700 monsters suddenly invade the city. I found myself hidden behind a broken wall, desperately trying to evade the notice of the monstrous Gloombeasts. Their presence was overwhelming, the air thick with the iron scent of blood, making it hard to breathe. These massive hulking creatures, with their thick matted fur and glowing menacing eyes. Seven of them roamed the streets near me, wreaking havoc and feasting upon unfortunate human corpses.

'I just a fifteen years old boy, what could I do?' cowered in fear. i see the woman corpse in front of me.

'I need to move from here!' I bite my thumb nail nervous.

the Gloombeast have appearance like a Labrador. it have shiny black skin and a spike in their back. Their body is around 4 meter long and 3 meter wide. Its eyes is completely black, their mouth full of sharp fang that can easily munched at a human like chewing a banana. It full of bulging muscle their claw is the same size as my leg.

'smell, they looks like dogs' I snapped awake.

Soon I take a bunch of horse manure and rub it around my body to mask my human scent, I cautiously make my way towards the south city gate, hoping for an escape from this pandemonium.

-Crack!

Suddenly, a Gloombeasts drew closer.

'shit!' I stopped behind a broken stable wall. standing still like a statue. Instead made from exquisite white marble, it coated by cow manure!.

-Crunch! Crunch!

Thankfully its attention was diverted as it pounced upon a lifeless horse, greedily devouring its remains.

'I need to take a detour' Realizing that I was now a mere seven meters away from one of these terrifying creatures.

I have no choice, I already see they could easily jump ten meters with a single leap. Running from them was not an option. Sweat dripped from my forehead as I pressed myself against the wall.

Two hours latter.

Time seems to move slowly as I sneak through a tunnel, small alley, and hole at some house to avoid some of Gloombeasts that's still roaming around, searching for prey. Because the smell or cow manure in my body they seem didn't notice me even when the distance is only three meter, but I don't want to test my luck.

As I come to near the south gate, the sounds of battle gradually faded into an eerie silence.

'They seem already finished the evacuation process!, but there is still dozen of Gloombeast around. what is the soldier doing? 'I actually know the reason why, I just wont to accept it. I believe there still hope left.

The soldier was outnumbered from the start, their only option is to evacuate most of the citizen they can, rather than try to save the whole city.

taking a turn again to avoid more and more Gloombeast. The road is taking more and more long each time I avoid them.

'the way back will come but once, be steadfast!' I remember my father used to say that. A quote of a very popular novel.

-Shing!

The night sky that full of stars changed by hundred of circle covering the sky. The circles shine with many hue of red. Wiping the darkness from the city below. the Gloombeast ignore it too focused to feast at the corpse of human.

As my worst-case scenario come true. A rain of fire falling toward the earth burning everything that its touch, I saw some nearby houses burning with the dead owners inside. The flames started spreading, creeping closer to the rubble where I stood. Like a chain reaction, the fire consumed the broken homes around the wall of the city, forming a ring of blazing fire.

"Fire... Gloombeasts are weak against fire. That's why the guards set this place ablaze. They hoped to kill them all in flames," I realized, my mind racing. The remaining 400 Gloombeasts, most of them caught off guard by the sudden hail of fire, they were too focused on feasting the corpses to react in time.

Panic as they ran aimlessly, lots of unfortunate Gloombeasts fur catching fire and searing (searing as the sealing got it?) their fate.

This was my chance. I hurriedly made my way towards a spot that had not yet been consumed by the fire. Freedom was within reach, but I couldn't afford to be reckless.

'Steadfast!' i clench my fist

There was still dozen of Gloombeasts out there, trying to escape this hell just like me. The distance between me and the opening was only ten meters. my luck run out, two Gloombeast that had survived the fire also noticed the opening of fire like me.

Two of them have been heavily injured from the battle with the soldier and the fire. One of them calmly looking at me and the other one start to charge at me.

Its eyes locked onto me full of anger, it was enraged, as if blaming me for its suferig. The creature charged at me with full speed, preparing to tear me apart with its claws.

In a split second, I instinctively dodged, stumbling over a guard's lifeless body and rolling for two meters until I hit my back to a broken wall.

Meanwhile, the Gloombeast couldn't stop its charge and collided with a burning home. the roof of big home collapse from the charge. burying most of its body under it.

It desperately tried to escape the flames and the rubble. But it just make the monster more trapped under it.

"It hurts," I muttered, trying to stand and using the dead guard's sword as a cane. "Can't you die somewhere else?" I kicked the guard's body away in frustration.

The fire burned its flesh, emitting a scent of grilled meat.

"God, I'm hungry," I pleaded, realizing how hungry I was. a while since my last meal, a hard bread from Mrs. Orik. It was the best food I had tasted since arriving in this world. That's the only thing I've been eaten till now.

As the Gloombeast struggled to free itself from the debris, some wooden structures impaled its body, causing blood to drip from its mouth and wounds. Before it could escape, I knew I had to kill it so it couldn't pursue me anymore. Gathering my courage and strength, I took hold of the dead guard's sword and ran towards the beast, aiming to stab it directly between the eyes.

That was the plan, but I missed, instead I stabbing it in the right eye. My action makes the creature more angry instead. It roared and pushed me away with its free hand, but thankfully it remained trapped in the rubble.

-Thud!

I got pushed back to the dead guard body. laying beside him. my but hurts and my chest feels burning.

'what the hell wrong with me?' it should be obvious with my weak strength, penetrating its skull was impossible. If it was so easy for me to kill it, the guards should have had no problem dealing with these bastards. Once again, I stood up with unsteady breath and tried to calm myself.

"I can't give up yet," I muttered, readying my body for second round. With both my trembling hands tightly gripping the dead guard's sword, I charge at the beast like a mad dog. Approaching from its blind right eye, I mustered all the strength I had left. Ducking under its head,

"AARGH, DIE YOU BASTARD!" I plunged the sword into its neck. with all my might and tore through the flesh, creating a massive gap between its head and the body.

-spurt

Blood sprayed everywhere, drenching me in a crimson coat under it. Crawling out from beneath its lifeless corpse, I struggled to stand to again. It was time to escape.

Slowly I drag my broken leg, I think I sprain my ankle too when stumbled at guard corpse before. Because the fight before I got pushed back for another 10 meters from the gate. The fire make all the building near me is already collapsed leaving me open from all other side.

"ROAR!" Suddenly the one that has not attacked me yet start to move. its red eyes locked on me ang huge jaw open trying to eat me.

"Fuck! I forget about that one."

Slowly circling me it drags the body with its last strength. Some spear and sword stuck at its body. The blood slowly dripping from the scars.

As the monster prepare to charge, i quickly run. ignoring the pain my injured leg i run towards the big statue nearby.

Thankfully the Gloombeast also have injured its leg. it slowed compare the first one, but its still way more faster than me. I hide behind the statue and see another dead guard laying with pool of blood.

In a flash the Gloombeast already in front of me with no more than 10 meter distance. I quickly take the dead guard iron spear and aim the spear head to the beast.

'No., this is my only chance of winning. I need to make it work somehow.'

My hands are shaking, this spear is so heavy. My legs hurt, I can't keep my body any longer. All my strength is already exhausted when I finished the Gloombeast before.

I rest my spear shaft at the foot of the God statue behind me. reducing the weight of the spear significantly and hold the spear head slightly upward in front of my chest with both of my hand.

I lock my eyes toward the beast that starting to charge.

'The worst thing that can happen is I'm dead, again. Right?'

'What could be worse than that, it's not that you can become vegetable all the rest of your live when the facing a living monster?'

'at least my wish already come true, I can walk and run with my own leg feel the wind rubs my hair, eat and taste the real food, and going adventure a little. How can I be more shameless to ask more than this?'

'The Gods already giving me enough, a chance to life my life like what I always wishing for. To be free.'

'If this is my destiny, so be it'

As the monster come closer the time become still.

My heart beating faster and faster. I take a deep breath. As seeing my end getting nearer and nearer.

-Fuyu

'God, I'm grateful as your blessing that you bestowed upon me. For the short life that you give me, you make my dream come true'

'The ends always come at the most unexpected way, and I won't get upset for this life that you give me.'

'it's fun life, I'm happy, and I have no regrets.'

'Thank you'

I scream with all my might

"DIE!"

I intended to scream [HIYAAP!] like a murim hero as they thrust their weapon, but well.... its fine, I guess?
