Chapter 1:
The afternoon sun cast a warm glow as it began its descent in the sky. It was around 5:45 pm when a weary young boy named Sonoshita Mahiro found himself standing alone, his body exhibiting signs of fatigue. Beads of perspiration dotted his forehead, evidence of the exertion he had endured while completing numerous club tasks. Yet, despite his weariness, Mahiro managed to regain his composure and steady his breathing, seizing a momentary respite.
A glimmer of hope flickered within him when a distant voice emanated from a crackling speaker, announcing the imminent arrival of a train. This auditory cue served as the catalyst Mahiro needed to muster the strength to stand on his own two feet. Swiftly, he reached down to retrieve his bag, preparing himself for the imminent departure of the train.
Mahiro's gaze swept across the interior of the train carriage, and fortune smiled upon him as he spotted an unoccupied spot. Seizing the opportunity, he hurriedly claimed it as his own. However, a sense of trepidation mingled with his relief, as weariness threatened to engulf him entirely.
"Crap, this is bad," he muttered under his breath, his eyelashes fluttering between open and closed, a valiant effort to stave off sleep. The prospect of missing his intended stop loomed ominously in his mind. Yet, after contemplating his options, he arrived at a decision. Surrendering to the inevitability of slumber seemed the only logical choice.
"It's alright, just a few minutes," he reassured himself, convincing his weary soul to embrace the tranquility of sleep. With that conviction, Mahiro allowed his heavy eyelids to slide shut, his body relaxing as he inhaled a deep breath. The sound of the approaching train grew louder, its wheels gliding over the metal tracks with a rhythmic symphony. Each passing moment seemed to intensify the allure of sleep, further eroding Mahiro's dwindling resolve. The melodic cacophony of the train's journey acted as a lullaby, enticing him towards the realm of dreams.
-
After an indeterminate span of time, Mahiro gradually stirred from his slumber, his senses awakening with a sluggishness born of deep rest. As his eyes fluttered open, a perplexing sight greeted him, causing his brow to furrow in confusion. A button, positioned at an uncomfortably close proximity, materialized before his bleary gaze. It was flanked by two protruding objects, their nature and purpose eluding him in his half-awake state.
Seeking to shake off the remnants of sleep, Mahiro attempted to rise, only to encounter an unexpected sensation beneath his head. His efforts were thwarted by a soft and velvety texture, possessing a delicate balance between suppleness and resilience. The material beneath him yielded just enough to support the weight of his head, while bestowing a comforting gentleness upon his senses. It was an experience akin to stumbling upon a rare treasure, an encounter with pure bliss.
Confusion mingled with a sense of surrealism etched itself upon Mahiro's countenance. The hazy remnants of slumber still clung to his thoughts, blurring the line between dream and reality. Yet, as he basked in the golden cocoon of comfort that cradled his head, a faint smile graced his lips. Whatever peculiar circumstances had led him to this moment, Mahiro found solace in the serene embrace of the ethereal material beneath him.
Though a contented smile adorned Mahiro's face, his immersion in bliss was abruptly shattered by a husky voice that pierced through the air, rousing him from his reverie.
"Uhm, would you mind moving away?"
Startled, he hastily rose from his position, turning his gaze towards the source of the voice. And there, before him, stood the very girl who had provided him with the golden pillow for his slumber. Finally seeing her face, Mahiro found himself captivated by her striking appearance.
She was a girl, her ebony tresses cascading down in waves, accentuating her slender figure. Her eyes held a mesmerizing hue, a subtle touch of purple that complemented her creamy complexion. Mahiro's cheeks flushed, realizing that he had unknowingly stared at her face for several seconds.
"Are you alright?" she asked, her voice carrying an icy tone that sent a shiver down Mahiro's spine, threatening to freeze him in place. Her ebony eyes met with Mahiro's.
"Y-yeah," Mahiro stammered, quickly averting his gaze.
"Um, I'm so sorry for disturbing you," Mahiro continued.
"It's okay," the girl replied.
With that, the girl concluded the conversation, as if she bore no ill will towards him. Mahiro couldn't help but ponder the nature of human interactions, realizing that after causing inconvenience to someone, it was natural for them to seek a swift resolution, wanting to put the incident behind them. He took a step back, creating a small distance between himself and the girl. The train was relatively empty, amplifying the awkward silence that hung between them.
As Mahiro gazed out of the train window, he recollected that he was still en route and had yet to reach his destination. Glancing at the time, he realized that approximately 15 minutes had elapsed. Fortunately, he hadn't missed his station yet, as it coincided with the upcoming one. However, amidst his thoughts, the image of the black-haired girl lingered in his mind.
Could it be that she missed her station because of me? That's bad. Really bad.
"Uhm, miss," Mahiro ventured, breaking the silence.
"Did you perhaps miss your station?" he inquired, concern etched on his face.
"Eh? Are you stalking me?" she retorted playfully, yet her fierce aura infused her words with a distinct sense of discontent, catching Mahiro off guard with her response.
"N-no! I'm just wondering if you missed your stop because of me," Mahiro clarified, his voice sounding desperate.
"Well, fortunately, no. I haven't missed my stop. If my stop had come, I'll just simply move you away from me," she replied, her words delivered with a flat tone.
"I-i see..." Mahiro muttered, his relief palpable.
It was rather audacious of him to let a stranger allow him to rest on her lap, even if only for a moment. Most people would have promptly pushed him away, yet she had patiently waited for him to awaken. Gratitude swelled within him, although tempered by a pang of regret due to her earlier brusque words. But he understood that such reactions were only natural.
"Would you let me pay for your ticket?" he offered, attempting to compensate for the trouble he had caused.
"Huh?" she responded, clearly taken aback.
"I mean, I caused you trouble, so let me repay you, even if it's just by covering your ticket fare," Mahiro explained earnestly.
"No, it's fine. You don't need to worry about it," she declined politely.
"Okay if that's what you wantâ"
"Grrâ"
Mahiro's sentence was interrupted by a loud growl emanating from no other than his stomach, a clear indication of his hunger. He blushed, attempting to conceal his embarrassment.
"I already paid for my ticket. I used my Suica card at the gate, so I can't exit without doing that. Paying for my ticket would be useless. However, someone did come up with a great idea. Instead of treating my ride, treat me to some food," she suggested with a mischievous grin.
"You mean right now?" Mahiro questioned, checking the time, which indicated it was just past 6:30 pmâearly for dinner but not entirely unusual.
"Are you against it now?" she prodded, curiosity dancing in her eyes.
"No, it's not like that. I'm just asking if you want to go right now or another day. I don't mind treating you to food on any day that is convenient for you," Mahiro clarified, his gaze fixed upon her.
"Hmm..." she pondered, her lips curled into a mischievous smile.
"That's smooth," she continued. Mahiro tilted his head in confusion.
"You're suggesting that we go on a date another day, right?" she teased, a grin piercing through her expression, in contrast in her cold attitude earlier.
"N-No-no!! I'm not suggesting anything like that... I'm just asking if you're really okay going out to eat with someone you don't know, especially at a time like this," Mahiro stumbled over his words, flustered.
"We're just going for a quick dinner, and you want this to be finished as soon as possible, right? It wouldn't be convenient to let this debt linger for some time. So, it's better to finish it right now," she reasoned, her tone laced with playful persuasion.
"I guess that makes sense," Mahiro acquiesced, a mixture of nervousness and anticipation flooding his thoughts.
Both Mahiro and the black-haired girl disembarked at the same station. She pointed out a restaurant she wished to visit, and to Mahiro's surprise, it was conveniently located near his house.
As they arrived at the location, the sign outside of the restaurant caught Mahiro's eye. It was spelled out as "Tachibana" though he didn't pay any more attention after that.
The exterior exuded an air of sophistication, which extended to the tastefully decorated interior. They were promptly greeted upon entering and escorted to their seats. The menu boasted a selection of dishes commonly found in family restaurants, along with a wide array of desserts, ranging from ice cream to delectable cakes. The beverage options included a variety of juices, as well as hot and cold drinks.
As Mahiro perused the menu, he absentmindedly checked the contents of his wallet, only to be met with disappointment. It would be wiser to postpone this outing to another day; he didn't have enough funds to cover both their meals.
"Hehe, what's with that face, mister? Don't you have enough money to treat a girl whose lap you used as a pillow on a train?" the black-haired girl playfully taunted, a mischievous grin adorning her features.
Mahiro's cheeks flushed momentarily, but he managed to regain his composure.
"I do have money with me... but I don't think it would be enough for the two of us," Mahiro confessed, his voice tinged with a hint of regret.
"What? You made me worry for a second. I thought for a moment that you didn't have any money on you. As long as you can treat me, that's fine, right? There's a saying that goes, 'You should eat until you're satisfied,'" she quipped, her words accompanied by a playful smirk.
Mahiro felt a slight pang of irritation at being teased by the girl he was about to treat with his own money. However, who was he to complain? After all, he had inconvenienced her by using her lap as a pillow and causing her trouble. Treating her to a meal was the least he could do.
"Ohhh, this looks yummy!" the girl exclaimed, her eyes lighting up as their ordered dishes arrived.
"One tempura meal set. Enjoy yourselves," the waiter announced.
Mahiro mustered a smile, albeit forced.
"Thank you for the food!" The girl dove into her meal with gusto, paying little attention to Mahiro. Observing the satisfaction on her face, he found solace in knowing that she enjoyed the food.
"By the way, missâŚ" Mahiro began, attempting to resume their conversation.
"Stop that," she interrupted, her tone firm.
"Hm?" Mahiro blinked in confusion.
"Drop the politeness. You can talk to me casually, just as I do with you. By the way, what's your name?" she asked, her eyes meeting his.
"I-I'm Sonoshita Mahiro," he stammered, slightly taken aback.
"Thank you for the food, Mahiro-kun. I'm Tachibana Hinazuki," she introduced herself, a warm smile gracing her lips.
"Don't mention it. As long as you're satisfied, Tachibana-san," Mahiro replied, a touch of relief in his voice.
After some time, Hinazuki finished her meal and prepared to leave. However, Mahiro offered to walk her home.
"I'll go with you, Tachibana-san. It's already late, so let's go together," he insisted.
"No, I'll be fine. You've already accompanied me home," she declined politely.
"Ehh?" Mahiro's disbelief was evident.
"I live upstairs," she clarified with a gesture pointing her finger upwards, a hint of amusement in her tone.
"Eh... for real?" Mahiro exclaimed, unable to fathom the coincidence.
"Okay, that's great. I'll head out then," he responded, his voice a mix of surprise and anticipation.
Mahiro bid his farewell and began to make his way out of the restaurant.
"Maybe I'll grab some takoyaki; that's all my few hundred yen can afford," he mused to himself.
"Mahiro, wait a moment," a husky voice called out to him, stopping him in his tracks. Mahiro turned toward the source, only to be greeted by the sight of a black-haired girl in plain clothes, clutching a brown paper bag as she approached him.
"Take this. Thank you for treating me," she said, extending the bag toward him.
"What's this?" Mahiro asked, confused by the unexpected gesture.
"My mom made this when she saw us, but I'm the only one eating it between us. She thought it wouldn't be right to let my friend go home with an empty stomach, so please take it. She doesn't know what you did first hence you're treating me in the first place, but I'll keep that to myself." Hinazuki explained, grinning mischievously at Mahiro.
Mahiro's heart swelled with gratitude and a newfound warmth. Accepting the bag, he couldn't help but return her teasing smile.
With a sense of contentment, Mahiro bid his farewell to Hinazuki, a small smile playing on his lips. As he clutched the paper bag tightly by his side, he couldn't help but feel a pang of bittersweetness in his heart. This encounter, brief as it was, had left a lasting impression on him. It was likely their first and last meeting, and a small void remained in Mahiro's heart as he pondered what could have been.
Deciding to head home swiftly, Mahiro made his way back, grateful for the restaurant's close proximity to his house. Once inside his home, he wasted no time in opening the bag and revealing its contents. The aroma of the food wafted through the air, filling his senses with a comforting familiarity.
"Thank you for the food," he whispered gratefully, savoring each bite with utmost appreciation. The warmth and flavors enveloped him, providing a sense of satisfaction that filled both his stomach and his heart. In that moment, Mahiro cherished the simple joy derived from this ordinary encounter.
As he finished the meal, he couldn't help but reflect on the experience. He was grateful for the chance to make amends with someone he had unintentionally caused trouble for on the train. It had been a fleeting but meaningful connection, and now it belonged to the realm of memories. Tomorrow would bring another mundane day, but Mahiro carried with him a newfound appreciation for the unexpected encounters that could arise from the tapestry of everyday life.
Chapter 2
Or so Mahiro thought. Arriving at his school, a sight of a girl beating down four strong-looking guys greeted him. That girl with tan holding the collar of one of the boys. It look like she has beaten them up and just like that, she tossed the boy on the ground. The students around them watched for a bit but dispersed and proceeded to enter the school after the tanned girl eyed them.
Mahiro averted his gaze as to not cause any attention towards him but the tanned girl called him out despite gis efforts.
"You there, come here a bit."
Mahiro and the girls eyes met. The aura and the preassure he felt from her left him to obglied obidiently to her orders even though he is not in any position to take any request or order from her.
"Can you-" The tanned girl looked closely at Mahiro's face. He everted his gaze with as the pressure he felt was to much to hold.
"Are you perhaps Mahirun?"
Upon hearing his name shifted to a weird nickname, he rembered the face of the only person in the world that would call him that.
"Emimi-chan?"
"Yeah! It's me! How have you been Mahirun!"
The enthuiasm of this tanned girl gave a gap in her harsh demanding demenir earlier. Emimi, Mahiro's friend from middle school.
"I didn't know you attended this school, Emimi-chan."
"Yeah, I just transferred this week. I was suppose to study in [name] but I eventually decided to study here becuase I hear that competion is much stronger here."
"Well, if what you mean competition is in the track and field club then you're right. In overall, competions in clubs are above normal."
"I see, so the rumors surround this school was accurate."
"More or less." Mahiro replied.
"By the way, what's with this people on the ground?" Mahiro asked nonchalanty. Non of the flustering he showed earlier was obvious. He batted them an eye and ignored them immediately.
"Ahh, these. Well they're trying to hit on me. Jeez what are these people doing so early in the moning."
"Ohh are these 1st years?" Mahiro asked Emimi.
"I dunno."
"Yeah I'm right there are 1st years" me muttered as he stare while opening their eyelids.
"I'll take care of them, these as the loud delinquents of 1st year. You can go and leave them on me." He offered Emimi.
"You can go home now Tachibana-san, Akiomi-senpai"
"Yep. Got it."
Just like that, Tachibana and Akiomi headed outside and walked side by side.
"Are we not going to stay with Mahiro-kun, senpai?" Tachibana Asked.
"Well I would love to stay and let him finish with the remaining work but he insists on leaving it all by himself. My work is finished already and there's a little more left for him to do tonight." Akiomi answered.
"What do you mean your work is already finished?" Tachibana asked Akiomi.
"My job was to ask people for certain formats for the data he needs to sort. All he needs now is to implement the format so it's not really a work that needs your full attention. It's more on repetition."
"Well if that's the case, isn't it more logical to help him if the task requires quantity over quality." Tachibana stopped at her tracks, having thought of going back to help Akiomi.
"How good are your computer skills, Tachibana-chan?" Akiomi asked.
"I can type decently," Tachibana answered.
"I see. You can go back tomorrow morning and check how he is doing. But you should go home now. " Akiomi insisted
"But senpai-"
"Mahiro requested it."
"Huh?" Tachibana tilted her head, confused at what Akiomi said.
"He requested that I get you home safely tonight."
Tachibana looked behind her, looking back at the path she traversed just a second ago.
"Okay got it. Let's trust him."
Seeing that Tachibana had come to a conclusion, she gripped her fist and decided to trust Mahiro.
"Let's go."
The two proceeded to leave. Tachibana was sent home safely by Akiomi, which she thanked for politely.
Back in the Data Analysis club room. Mahiro opened his laptop and proceeded to meticulously check every single information and document he got his hands on. After a few hours he decided to go outside to feel the night breeze. He bought juice in the vending machine. Mahiro didn't go for a coffee because he was about to sleep soon and coffee would refrain him from doing so.
He went back inside the club room and for another hour, he stared at the laptop screen non-stop. After feeling his aching back from staying in a position and not moving at all, he looked at the clock and decided to call it a day.
He reached for the locker which normally contained the supplies for cleaning classrooms but none of those were to be seen. Instead a mat, a small blanket and a small single pillow was inside the metal locker. He took those out and laid down on the floor. He unbuttoned his white uniform and wore the t-shirt he had packed in his bag in the morning.
"Mmnnyaaaaaaa-"
He stretched his arms upwards and yawned as he wiped his tired eyes. He reached for his phone to set an alarm. Time shown was 9:00 pm.
"I'm sleeping early tonight so let's just wake up early tomorrow. Doing work while sleep deprived will just make your work's quality poor so it's important to have proper sleep."
Mahiro closed and locked the door which he double checked if he properly did. Staying out in school isn't that dangerous of a thing but it doesn't kill to be carefull. He has a laptop in him that has important documents to be submitted.
Mahiro snuggled his small blacked just the right fit for him and proceeded to sleep.
Few moments later the sound of a waterfall and chirping birds woke him up. It was his alarm he set hours ago. His eyes were much heavier than he expected but something wasn't right.
"Eh? What's this?"
He couldn't feel his blanket anymore because he was freezing. He reached for his phone to stop the alarm and have a light to find where his blanket had gone.
