Chapter 38 - Definition Of A Soldier

Chen Ran and the others looked at the old soldier's lonely figure with surprise in their eyes. In an instant, they could not help but want to know more.

Not long after, they realized that there was only the veteran on the mountain. They could not see anyone else at all.

The old soldier's figure looked very lonely. He was like an old geezer that had fallen behind, or an old lone wolf on the grassland. Endless loneliness surrounded the old soldier.

That view made one feel extremely sad.

Seeing this scene, Chen Ran and the other three not only had fighting spirit in their eyes, but there was also a hint of sadness and doubt.

"The veteran is alone. Why is he blowing the horn here in the rain? Who is he trying to summon?"

Crash! Crash!

The heavy rain continued to wash over the old soldier's body, but the old soldier was not swayed at all. He continued to blow the horn in his hand, as if his life depended on it. If this battle did not stop, he would not stop.

Swoosh! Swoosh!

Although this was the first time Chen Ran and the other three had seen such a scene, their hearts were also deeply moved. Moreover, because they were not far away, they could vaguely see the tears flickering in the veteran's eyes, instantly blurring his already turbid eyes.

"Why did you do that?"

"Why would an old soldier blow such an impassioned horn with all his might, but his heart is so sad?"

Chen Ran and the other three continued to stand there and listen. The doubts in their hearts grew stronger and stronger, but none of them, including Li Xiang, wanted to go over and disturb the veteran. They just listened quietly.

The veteran did not seem to see Chen Ran and the others. He continued to sound the horn.

After an unknown period of time, when Chen Ran and the others heard the call, their expressions suddenly changed slightly. At this moment, their eyes were really playing a battle.

They seemed to see warriors jumping up from the trenches on the battlefield. Then, they held their guns and charged at the enemy in front of them with cannonballs falling from the sky.

On the battlefield, the flames of war were burning, and blood was splattering everywhere. However, no one retreated, and soon, soldiers fell one after another. Large amounts of blood dyed the ground red, but no one stopped. Those who were still alive continued to charge.

"Kill, kill, kill!"

Killing cries filled with killing intent reverberated between heaven and earth, even suppressing the sound of cannon fire…

Swoosh!

Suddenly, the veteran put down the bugle in his hand. His dry lips opened slightly as he growled.

"Charge, brothers, charge…

"Kill, kill, kill…"

The veteran kept shouting. His hoarse voice was filled with killing intent. His voice was not loud, but the hoarseness sounded very ear-piercing. It even contained cold killing intent.

In an instant, the old soldier's turbid eyes lit up. They flickered with killing intent.

"What happened to the veteran?"

Upon seeing this scene, the doubts in the minds of Chen Ran and the others intensified.

At this time, Li Xiang suddenly opened his mouth and said, "It's here, today. Just as the horn sounded, these older generation soldiers charged out from here. They braved artillery fire and launched a deadly charge through a rain of bullets. They broke through the line of those bastards and killed their way into the ground."

"However, in the end, apart from this veteran, no one in the battalion returned. In the end, he was the only one left.

As he spoke, Li Xiang paused for a moment, took a deep breath, and said, "After that, this veteran never left the border again. He stayed here alone to grow old just to protect the Martyrs' Cemetery.

"Every year at this time, he will play this song. The land under your feet was exchanged for the lives of more than nine thousand soldiers. They will sleep here forever as martyrs and heroes.

"These heroes exchanged their lives for our country. Even if they die, they will always protect this land.

"An inch of mountains and rivers, an inch of blood. The country's achievements definitely didn't come out of thin air. All of this was exchanged with the lives of veterans.

"That's why, today, I'm going to tell all of you what it means to be a Fire Country soldier and what it means to be a comrade-in-arms. A true Fire Country soldier can trust his back to the other party. A team is a team. Everyone will kill the enemy together and leave alive together. As long as everyone is still breathing, they will fight without stopping."

When Li Xiang said these words, he kept looking at Yan Poyue. In the end, he emphasized, "The veterans will gradually wither, but the friendship of comrades will always exist."

"Comrades? Friendship?"

Yan Poyue looked at the veteran in silence. His eyes began to change bit by bit. The coldness from before had faded a lot, and his gaze became complicated.

'What's a comrade?

'I want to be strong. For what?

'What is an enemy, what is a comrade…'

Yan Poyue's eyes were filled with regret. After a few seconds, he replied, "Reporting, I was wrong."

With a serious expression, Li Xiang asked loudly, "What did you do wrong?"

Yan Poyue shouted, "Reporting, once a comrade, always a comrade. I should not kill my own comrade. He is not my enemy. The enemy is outside the border."

Li Xiang nodded slightly.

He was glad that Yan Poyue had said those words. That's right, he had come here today to let Yan Poyue understand the meaning of being a soldier.

Ever since he saw Yan Poyue use the Strangulation Technique in the combat assessment, Li Xiang had been thinking of ways to teach Yan Poyue a lesson.

Yan Poyue was born into a military family, and his military qualities were very strong. He had talent, but his personality was a little arrogant, and he needed proper guidance.

There were some things that he had to experience in order to leave a deep impression.

This was the battlefield of the veterans. Although the flames of war had subsided, there was still the smell of war. Especially when the veterans' bugles could awaken a person's original intention the most.

Although Yan Poyue was very strong, he was still a soldier. He could naturally feel something when he heard these trumpets.

This was the reason why Li Xiang had specially brought these recruits here.

It was true that soldiers were strong, but they must not go in the wrong direction. The Fire Country did not lack powerful soldiers, but there were not many soldiers who could maintain their original intention from the beginning to the end.

The army was not only to teach a soldier skills but more importantly, to guide the soldier's mind and spirit.

More than a hundred years ago, the Fire Country was still in a state of chaos. Why was it able to rise and why was it able to be so united as the country with the largest population? It was all because of the influence of the spirit of these veterans.

The path of the Fire Country's rise was paved with the blood of generations of veterans. The veterans were not afraid of death, they dared to fight, they contributed…. It was something that all recruits should learn.

Soldiers were soldiers of the country. They did not come to show off how outstanding a person was, but to contribute to the country's strength!

Li Xiang turned to look at Chen Ran and asked in a low voice, "Did you do anything wrong?"

Meeting the company commander's gaze, Chen Ran straightened his back and shouted without hesitation, "Report, I didn't do anything wrong."

"This kid…"

Hearing this, Li Xiang's heart trembled and his mouth could not help but twitch.
