Day of prom....
I ran to and fro in my bedroom, heart thumping while I checked the time, realising I had a few minutes left.
Cameron would be here any second, and I still wasn't dressed. I had just stepped out of the shower, body dripping wet, while a stack of clothes was laid on my bed.
Could I at least get myself in check at this very hour, all confusion could return afterwards, but certainly not now.
Snatching my red lace panties off the dresser, I placed it on immediately, pairing it up with my strapless red lace bra.
Moving over to the mirror hung on the wall in my room, I stared blankly at my reflection, my eyes accessing every bit of me.
I looked a complete mess—Hair scattered all over the place, water dripping down my skin, eyes looking weak, I seemed to have given all hope, not until the arrival of my mom left a bit in my heart.
She took in the state of the room, eyes widening in shock.
"I'll pick them up" I said at once.
Turning to my figure sat right in front of the mirror, I saw the sadness in her eyes from the reflection in the mirror.
"I'm not going" I muttered quietly, gaze falling weak.
"What?" She asked unsure
"I'm not going to prom" I stated
I stood up from the chair, picking the clothes which were laid on the floor, and then arranging each one into the drawer.
Slumping on my bed, my hair soaked water into my pillows.
"Nia, what's wrong?" Mom called at once, moving closer towards the bed.
"Everything" I yelped
"Why does this always happen to me?"
"when it's time for me to do something normal like every other person, it backfires, and I realise I'm just not good enough. It works out for every other person, but me"
"It's like I'm doing something wrong" I yelled aloud.
"Honey" Mom began, taking a sit right next to my figure.
Her eyes lingered on me for a while, gaze boring into my skin, and in less than a moment, she grabbed my arms pulling me up.
"Mom, what are you doing?" I questioned, while being dragged to the dressing table.
"You are different from every other person, Nia." She began, stroking my hair softly.
"It's not everyday we hear of a girl who saved her mother from a heart disease. But you did"
"And I am more than lucky to have you as a daughter. And even more lucky will the man who weds you be" She added.
"Can you not just talk about me marrying, right now" I drawled.
"I'm being serious, your husband will be one lucky man" She said to me
A smile grew on her lips at the sight of me covering my ears, not wanting to hear her say anymore.
Plugging in my hair dryer into the wall socket, she at once began drying my hair, her round of questions following.
"So who's our date to prom?" She enquired.
"Someone" I responded, the corners of my lips tugging up.
"Of course, it's a person, Nia" She laughed
"Whoever it is—She sighed—I'll make sure you look good for him. You have to make the best of tonight" She smiled.
She ran the brush through my hair, her fingers doing the styling. Just like hers my hair was naturally wavy. The only difference was that her hair was brown, while mine was jet-black.
Staring at my reflection in the mirror, my eyes beamed brightly at the sight. Hair lightly falling to my face, styled and neatly put in place.
"Time for your makeup" I heard mom mutter, while she spun me around in the chair, turning me to face her.
"Why don't you want me looking into the mirror?" I questioned
"Cause your complaints will go on and on" She responded.
She ignored every comment I made, as she began applying the makeup, dabbing and rubbing on my skin.
Like an artist, she erased, applied, re-applied, sighs in between.
She was finally done, and the second I turned facing the mirror, I gasped at my reflection.
It was simply perfect.
Lips red and standing out, eyes subtle with my lashes more pronounced
A smile remained on my red-coloured lips as I stared on at the profile in the mirror.
"You're beautiful, Nia" Mom said to me, her hands patting me lightly on the head, while a smile remained on her face.
Getting to my feet, I wrapped her into a hug, my arms tightening in the hold.
"Honey, don't get your lipstick on me" I heard her say.
"Oh" I chuckled, backing away slowly.
And at that very moment, the sound of the door bell, filled the house, my eyes widening on realisation that Cameron had arrived.
"He's here!" I exclaimed, pacing around the room, grabbing all I need.
"I'll go get the door"
"Be calm, alright?" Mom uttered to me, right before proceeding out the room.
I snatched the black tube dress off my bed, wearing it over my body immediately. It stopped right below my feet, the tail of the dress sweeping the floor as I stepped forward.
Unpacking the red heels I had gotten from the store, I placed it on my feet at once, slipping through smoothly.
A smile crawled up my lips at the reflection staring back at me in the mirror. The dress remained ever perfect, accentuating my curves, cinching tightly to my body.
Cleavage slightly out for the eyes to behold, yet, my love for the dress, surpassed its flaws. Not like I could make out any.
Stepping out of the room not long after, I proceeded into the living room, my heels clicking after me.
I found mom talking to Cameron, his figure stood right by the door. They both turned to me the instant I walked in, their gazes fixed on my figure.
I saw the glint in Cameron's gaze, eyes meeting mine. For a while, his scrutiny remained on me, his eyes shifting from my head to toe, taking in the whole sight of me.
"Oh darling, you look beautiful" Mom uttered at once, coming over to hug me.
"Thanks" I mouthed.
I moved closer to Cameron, my gaze still on him while he peered back at me, lips parted.
"Can we go now?" He cleared his throat.
What?
Not even a compliment coming from him?
Now, what kind of guy does that?
He soon proceeded out of the house, my figure tagging right behind him, not mom pulled me back, stopping me for a moment.
"Thought you said there was nothing going on between the both of you" She uttered.
"Yes"
"There's nothing going on between us" I responded
"Then why's he your date to prom?"
"Mom! There's nothing going on between him and I. We're just....
"Can we talk about this when I get home?" I uttered at once, planting a kiss right on her lips, then hurrying out of the house, right after bidding her goodbye.
I soon got into Cameron's car, his eyes still lingering on my profile.
"What?" I questioned, already turning nervous at his stares.
"Did you brush your hair?" He uttered out of nowhere.
What?
Of all things to notice, my hair was the only thing he focused on?
Great!
His gaze remained on my face, and in a second, it shifted to my chest.
Quickly looking away, he started the car, driving off at once, silence following afterwards.
