Chapter 16 - Magic Crystals

"Mr. Thorsson, I am quite curious," Elwin paused, his eyes shimmering with confusion and curiosity. "I've encountered a specific type of crystal multiple times within this fortress, such as when I first arrived and in the interrogation room. Every time I approach these crystals, I always feel an indescribable sense of weakness."

Sok's gaze quivered slightly, and he slowly nodded. His voice carried a heaviness, "These are the treasures of our country, Rek, the magic crystals."

"Magic crystals?" Elwin rolled the name around in his mouth, his brow slightly furrowed, "Are they used to detect magic?"

A deep light sparkled in Sok's eyes, the corner of his mouth curling into a small smile, "Yes, Elwin. Magic crystals can indeed detect magic, but their function goes far beyond that. These magic crystals can also absorb, store, and even release magic. Our people embed these crystals into weapons, thereby creating powerful magical weapons. This is why our Twin Towers Fortress can withstand the magical attacks of other countries. It's also why other nations are so covetously greedy for our magic crystals."

Then, Sok posed a question, "Do you know why it's called the Twin Towers Fortress?" Elwin shook his head, indicating his ignorance of why the fortress was so named. Then, he asked curiously, "Why is this fortress called the Twin Towers Fortress? Is it not because of the tall towers on both sides of the fortress?"

Sok nodded, his eyes sparkling with intelligence as he explained, "Indeed, Elwin, your guess is very close to the truth. There's a towering tower on each side of this fortress, and they are the core structures of the fortress. At the top of these two towers, a large magic crystal is embedded in each. They create a strong attraction between each other, forming a powerful magical shield to protect the fortress. If an enemy attempts a magical attack, the shield absorbs and neutralizes these magical forces. Once the shield has absorbed a certain level of magical energy, it can also use a special emission device to direct these energies towards the enemy, implementing a large-scale attack."

Upon hearing Sok's explanation, Elwin's eyes were filled with awe and admiration. He had never heard of such a powerful magical defense system that could absorb an enemy's magic and transform it into its own power. The wonders of all this exceeded Elwin's imagination. The shield was like an impregnable fortress, making the Twin Towers Fortress invincible, which deeply impressed upon Elwin the world's mysteries and wonders.

Sok continued, "It's because of the presence of the shield that the Twin Towers Fortress has never been breached. Therefore, enemy countries always try to send spies to sabotage our defense system. However, they can never succeed because our people here are extremely vigilant towards strangers. Precisely because these two towers are the core of the fortress and the most critical part of our defense system, hence the name Twin Towers Fortress."

Upon hearing this, Elwin was filled with more awe and curiosity about the Twin Towers Fortress and the magic crystals. He was deeply fascinated by the mysterious marvels of the Twin Towers Fortress, deciding to further explore the great fortress and the secrets behind the magic crystals.

"Are magic crystals very common? Are they easy to obtain?" Elwin asked curiously, his eyes sparkling with the thirst for knowledge.

Sok shook his head, his face wearing a thoughtful expression. He gazed at the magic crystal in his hand, as if seeing the passage of time in its azure luminescence.

"Magic crystals," he said slowly, "though unique to Rek, are not easy to mine. They are seen as a gift bestowed upon Rek by the gods, the only treasure of our land."

Sok's gaze travelled through the window, casting towards the distant mountain range. His eyes were filled with deep affection and worry for the future.

"Rek is not a large country," he continued, "but this land is surrounded by mountain ranges on all sides, forming a natural barrier that protects the people inside. Rek is far away from other countries, our place of living is like a paradise, self-sufficient, calm and peaceful."

As Elwin listened to Sok's words, his thoughts drifted to the distant mountains, trying to picture Rek, a country surrounded by mountains on all sides, resembling a utopia. He was full of curiosity about this mysterious country, but also deeply worried. He imagined himself in those unreachable mountains and valleys, searching for the god-given magic crystals.

He thought to himself, "If I had a magic crystal, maybe I could deal with the monster hunting me."

Sok looked at Elwin, his eyes as deep as the night sky. He saw the potential in this young man and also the responsibility he carried.

"Today's training ends here," Sok stood up, patting Elwin's head, "We'll continue with new training tomorrow morning, you need ample rest."

Elwin nodded. Even though he was physically and mentally tired, his eyes shone with determination. He thanked Sok, then turned and left the room. He knew he needed to restore his spirit and strength to their optimal state before tomorrow came.

Night had already enveloped Rek, with only a few stars twinkling in the sky. Elwin lay on his bed, closing his eyes, his heart full of anticipation for the next day.
