Chapter 60 - Journey

As their car pulled up to the dock, the cruise ship towered before them, a gigantic vessel casting an impressive silhouette against the cerulean sky. The ship's white paint glistened, reflecting the mid-morning sunlight. Its sleek design and size were a testament to human ingenuity and engineering prowess. Boarding the vessel felt like stepping into a different world, one far removed from their familiar surroundings.

Once on board, they were met by William, the captain of the vessel. His eyes brightened noticeably upon seeing Sam, reminding one of a fanboy's excitement, but with an undertone of reverence that was hard to miss. He didn't let his feelings color his professionalism, though his expressions betrayed his inner excitement. Sam nodded at him, a gesture that was reciprocated. A silent agreement passed between them - important discussions would wait until later.

William turned his attention back to his duties, getting the cruise ship underway with the practiced ease that came from years at sea. The vessel glided smoothly over the waters, the coastline shrinking in the distance until it was nothing but a faint line on the horizon. After half an hour, the ship's engines quieted, and they came to a gentle halt.

Everyone was lowered onto a lifeboat, their expressions mirroring the sense of confusion and anticipation Sam knew they must be feeling. As if on cue, a submarine surfaced, the intimidating form cutting through the surface of the ocean with the elegance of a predator. In a symphony of well-rehearsed movements, they disembarked from the lifeboat and boarded the submarine. The entire transition was seamless, a ballet of cooperation that spoke volumes about the competence of the crew.

Throughout it all, Sam stayed silent, letting his family and friends soak in the experience. There was confusion in their eyes, but he knew better than to explain. He wanted them to experience the marvel firsthand. He understood some things were better left unsaid, some experiences better left to unfold organically. And this, this unveiling of his grand vision, was undoubtedly one of them. As they descended into the depths of the sea, he felt a spark of anticipation ignite within him.

The ocean had always held an ethereal beauty for Sam, its depths teeming with secrets and wonders yet to be discovered. As they descended into the underwater abyss, the walls of the submarine transformed into a crystalline canvas that offered unobstructed views of the marine world outside. Bioluminescent creatures painted streaks of vivid color in the surrounding darkness. At the same time, schools of fish darted to and fro, glittering like silver coins under the dim light filtering from above. The spectacle held Sam and his companions spellbound, their faces pressed against the transparent walls, drinking in the mesmerizing view.

During the submarine's hour-long journey, the conversation was sparse, the enchanting seascape effectively stealing their words. Sam found himself reflecting on nature's incredible designs, his mind reveling in the diversity and complexity of marine life. It was a moment of tranquility amid the whirlwind of his project's development.

The tranquility was interrupted as their destination came into view. It was an underwater base, a sleek structure that stood in stark contrast to the organic chaos of the sea. Guided by an AI, the submarine docked seamlessly, the base's entrance opening to receive them like a spaceship ready for boarding. The sight of the underwater base filled them with awe; it was like a scene straight out of a science fiction film.

Eva, breaking the silence, turned to Sam. Her eyes sparkled with curiosity and awe as she asked, "This is awesome, Sam. What is this place?"

"This is a relay station," Sam replied, his voice tinged with pride. "It's also a warehouse where we store resources for transfer to the Death Island."

Eva's expression sobered instantly. "Death Island? Is it the same one I'm thinking of?" she asked, her tone dropping an octave.

"Yes, it is," Sam affirmed, his gaze steady. "That's why I brought you all here. I wanted you to see the progress on my project, and to understand my vision. Welcome to the future, everyone."

Their eyes widened as the magnitude of Sam's words hit home. The realization swept over them like a tidal wave - they were indeed looking at the future, a future Sam had envisioned and was relentlessly striving to create. The tour of the relay station marked the beginning of a revelation that would change their understanding of their son, their friend, and the world as they knew it.

Eva's astonishment grew as she absorbed Sam's words, her voice rising an octave. "A new project? Sam, you're always so secretive about your work!" Her words held an edge of reproach, even as her gaze remained riveted on the futuristic landscape unfolding before them.

Sam chuckled, countering her complaint with a light-hearted jab, "Alright, don't get all melodramatic on me." As the last syllable left his lips, his eyes gained a certain gleam, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Let's move on to Death Island."

Eva's surprise deepened. "Wait, isn't Death Island off-limits? I mean, even our government avoids it, despite its proximity," she objected, a crease of confusion marring her brow.

Sam rolled his eyes in mock exasperation, a cheeky grin tugging at his lips. "Slowpoke. Why do you think we've gone to all the trouble of building this underwater base?" He laughed, his teasing words hanging in the air between them.

Eva pouted slightly, but there was a gleam of excitement in her eyes. "Well, excuse me. It's hard to think straight when you're dropping bombshells left and right," she retorted, her playful retort smoothing the edges of her earlier confusion.

Their playful banter continued as they transferred to a new submarine, this one more robust and more fortified than the previous. The once captivating view outside morphed into a chaotic vortex of swirling marine life, unsettlingly serene in its pandemonium. This disquieting spectacle held their attention until the submarine entered a passageway that seemed to have been carved between walls of solid bedrock.

The transition was jarring, the chaos outside replaced by the eerie calm of the narrow tunnel. The ghostly glow of their submarine's lights on the cavernous walls cast long, dancing shadows that seemed to sway in rhythm with the vessel's gentle rocking. The murmurs of Sam and his companions filled the vessel, a chorus of awed whispers, nervous laughter, and apprehensive silence that heightened the sense of anticipation and dread.

The sight of the passageway, a solitary gash in the sea bed, set everyone's pulses racing. There was a silent consensus among them, a shared understanding that this threshold marked the entrance to the forbidden Death Island.

Their submarine docked smoothly, a testament to the AI's impeccable operation, and the hushed group emerged. Immediately, they were met by a brigade of robots, a stark contrast to the underwater base where robots were conspicuously absent. At the underwater base, they'd spent time in the loading and unloading docks. But here, at the entrance to the Death Island, these machines stood guard, their cold, metallic eyes scanning the newcomers. Yet, upon recognizing Sam and his companions, their potential threat dwindled, a warning of the lethal consequence that could befall any unwanted intruders.

Guided by a robot, they navigated through a labyrinth of winding tunnels until they spilled into a vast expanse. It was a deceptive space, not truly open but carved masterfully into the earth, evoking images of a bustling shopping mall or, perhaps more aptly, a nuclear bunker. The sheer size of it was mind-boggling, a testament to an architectural prowess that felt almost alien.

A gasp echoed in the chamber as their eyes adjusted to the sight. They were surrounded by hundreds, perhaps thousands, of robots, their steel bodies at a silent standstill, like soldiers waiting for a command.

"So, welcome to Death Island," Sam announced, his voice echoing ominously around the cavernous space. The silence that followed was heavy, a tangible manifestation of their awe and trepidation. Yet, amidst the deafening quiet, there was a spark of something else - anticipation. This was only the beginning, and the realization was both terrifying and exhilarating.

Eva, typically composed and fearless, seemed unusually apprehensive as she addressed Sam. "Sam, where are we? Why are there so many robots? Is this the start of a dystopia?" Her voice wavered, revealing a hint of uncertainty that tugged at Sam's heart.

"Hey, don't fret," he replied, his voice gentle in an attempt to soothe her worries. "These creations, these robots, they're all mine. They obey me. And trust me, there's a lot more variety to them than meets the eye."

"What, there are more than one type of robot?" Eva's voice echoed her astonishment. "I thought they were all the same, all-purpose robots."

A chuckle escaped from Sam's lips. "Ah, if only it were that simple. No, all-purpose robots aren't quite feasible at this point in time. Perhaps in the future, but for now, we work with specialized robots. We have Military, Construction, Researcher, Medical, and Exploration robots."

At this, Ryan, his father, spoke up. His voice, steady and resonant, was a stark contrast to Eva's earlier fearful tone. "I can understand the need for Military and Construction Robots, but what about the Researcher, Medical, and Exploration Robots? What's their deal?"

Sam cast his gaze at his father, the smile never leaving his face. He was glad to have this opportunity to enlighten them about his work, about the details that often remained hidden behind the curtains. He took a deep breath, readying himself to explain.
