Chapter 27 - A dream of death

The sun shone over my eyes, the grass swaying in the wind. I couldn't help but stare directly at it. It was an idyllic sight. A place not touched by human progress, its beauty preserved by primitive means.

My eyes watered, despair mixed with beauty. The footfalls of a laughing beast falling ever closer towards my position.

I didn't even have to turn my head to see the smile that took his face. The damned mocking smile. It truly was my end was it not.

My eyes closed, a smile gracing my features. It seemed that they wanted to gloat, to make light of my death and mock me. I would not allow that. If I were to die then I would die with dignity not in rage.

'Did I really only amount to this… to die at the first sign of hardship?'

Even at these pessimistic thoughts I still did not let my smile falter, I knew it was going to be the end for me. What was a couple bad thoughts in the grand scheme of things.

'Was your revenge really that shallow… could you not stand now and take your vengeance'

It was right, those thoughts at least. I had still not taken vengeance nor had I taken responsibility for my Kobolds. For their sacrifice and for their loyalty.

It was a shame that I was not able to stand, the dagger in my back had taken all that it could. With that damned poison of theirs it had immobilized me.

'Pathetic to the end aren't you? Heh"

'Yes… maybe I was pathetic but I tried.'

'Tried! You could have done better. We could have done better. It was your fa-'

'Quiet.'

I shut off that line of thought with a command. The pessimistic part of me went quiet at the tense tone I had used. My facade of peace was broken. A snarl appeared on my face as I quiet the thoughts that had consumed me.

A touch of warmth, one of smooth skin not that of the goblins. I opened my eyes in surprise.

'Black… a void' was the only thought in my mind as it took in my surroundings. It was a black void of nothingness. Just as it always was in my dreams.

A phantom sensation grabbed onto my hand. I felt the dainty fingers interlock with mine. A soft kiss of skin upon my own.

Shivering at its touch I try to turn my head, to find any sign of this person.

Of whoever had taken my hand.

Yet it was not to be, no matter where I went she was just out of reach.

I tried to call out. Even yelling at points but my voice did not travel. As if the place was devoid of air which it probably could be.

'Follow…' it was a whisper, I could barely even hear it.

It brought me from my reverie and into her embrace.

I could feel arms wrap around me as I was pulled towards some unknown direction.

'Warm~' I couldn't help but think. The embrace was so warm. I couldn't help but close my eyes. Enjoying the hug as best I could.

Eventually though it ended. The arms first softened in their grip before letting go completely.

I could feel whispers of some unknown language echoing in my ear. Hands taking my cheeks in their grasp.

A gentle rub and I was looking down. It was a woman, almost ethereal in her beauty.

"You.."

"Yes~?" Her hand reached to her mouth as she giggled behind it.

"Thou art surprised at my presence?"

She tilted her head, almost as if she was laughing at my stunned state.

It was that same expression that brought me from the very stunned position that I was.

I brought my hand up, her eyes curious as she traced it.

My hand wrapped around her waist. Bringing her closer. It was an instinct but I could not resist it.

Closer and closer she walked, guided along by my hand, before we were almost kissing in our proximity.

"My dreams… was that you?"

Her eyes widened as if she had not expected me to ask that. They quickly regained their previous mischievousness though.

She stepped back from where she was, lightly batting my arm from where it was holding her waist.

Her arms cane around her back as she lowered herself while looking up to me.

An almost giggling sound coming from her mouth. As if I had just told some grand joke.

"Me? Do thy even need to ask."

She was right, there was this sensation. This feeling. It was like a ravenous instinct yet even more than that.

And it was telling me that this person? This being? Whatever she was. She was the entity that I had only dreamed of.

"It seems that thou has come to a decision~" her voice was telling, a hint of amusement in it as she turned her back to me.

I watched as she walked away, a cape of light following her.

Honestly I didn't know how I hadn't noticed that detail. I wasn't going to question it now though.

Following her, I cloaked myself in the light. It wasn't for any particular reason. It just felt… right. It felt comfortable to be in. Like a warm embrace from a loved one. Or a particularly nice evening.

Through all this I found myself staring at our surroundings. The ever shifting void. Even if it was all black it shifted as if it was moving, not us.

A weird illusion or something. I just shrugged my shoulders at it and continued to walk forward m. Ever cloaked by that sprouting light m.

Though I did notice that it had dimmed significantly from when we had started. A slight noise came from in front of me. I could barely hear it.

A ringing sound echoed through my ears. It pounded at my head. No it pounded my whole body. It was like a sledgehammer was being swung at every part of my body.

It hurt… yet it didn't.

"Goodbye till we meet again"

With that final goodbye I lost consciousness, my vision going blank as the nothingness around me faded into obscurity.
