Lyra felt her face grow even hotter, the color deepening across her cheeks. She couldn't quite understand why his words were affecting her so much, especially when Dylan remained calm, maintaining his composure. But as her gaze shifted to him, she noticed his ears were turning a faint red. Her mind raced, wondering if he felt ill, or perhaps, was fighting to keep his own composure in front of her. Did his words mean something deeper?
"Why are you..." Lyra began to speak but stopped herself, her thoughts swirling.
Before she could continue, Dylan suddenly interrupted, his voice low but urgent. "Be careful."
He moved swiftly, one hand grabbing her waist to pull her closer while the other grabbed the sharp vines, tugging them away from her. Lyra blinked in surprise as she caught sight of Dylan's hand, where a slight trickle of blood had begun to stain his skin.
"Oh no!" Lyra gasped in alarm.
Without thinking, she grabbed his uninjured hand and pulled him toward the nearest seating area. It was a cozy spot on the inner balcony that overlooked the main hallway of the building, while the other side had large, floor-to-ceiling windows that exposed the view to the outside. A curved sofa sat beneath the windows, surrounded by flowers, creating a tranquil atmosphere.
"Sit here," she said, gently guiding him to the sofa before rushing to fetch the medical box.
When she returned, she settled beside him and immediately began rummaging through the old box, her hands trembling slightly. Dylan, however, seemed to downplay the situation.
"It's fine. Just small scratches," he said, though his tone was soft. "But you should really remove those thorns. I don't want them hurting you."
"I planned to," Lyra muttered, "But then I got busy, and now look at this... I'll have Delilah take care of them right away." Her voice trailed off as she finally found the ointment.
She carefully applied it to his palm, but when she glanced around for something to wrap the wound, there was nothing suitable.
"Hold on, I'll find something to cover it," she said, rising to search once more.
"No need, Lyra," Dylan objected, but she ignored him.
A few moments later, she returned with a piece of torn fabric in her hands.
"I hope you don't mind," she said, offering it to him. "I tore a piece from my old clothes that were lying around."
"Why?" Dylan asked, raising an eyebrow. "I told you not to worry about it."
She smiled gently. "It's fine. They're just old clothes, and they probably don't fit me anymore."
As she carefully wrapped the cloth around his hand, her thoughts shifted back to Xavier's words from the previous day, making her pause. Her expression faltered for a moment.
"Lyra?" Dylan's voice broke through her thoughts, concerned. "What's wrong?"
She flinched, quickly finishing the binding. Then, feeling flustered, she blurted out, "I swear this wasn't planned! I wasn't trying to follow your tradition or anything. I totally forgot about it."
Dylan chuckled softly, a fond smile curling on his lips. "Cute. But I wasn't thinking about our tradition either. I'm actually surprised you know about it. It's such an ancient custom, hardly anyone follows it anymore."
"I heard about it from Xavier…" Lyra admitted.
"Ah, that explains it." Dylan smiled knowingly. "That tradition still holds significance for some, but these days, people come up with their own ways to express love."
He pulled something from his pocket and leaned in closer to her, his breath warm against her ear. Lyra froze, feeling the warmth of his arms around her, as if time slowed. His proximity made her heart race, and she fought the urge to hold her breath. If she exhaled now, he would definitely feel it.
"Even though I've already given you my official gifts," he whispered, his voice hushed but warm, "this is my gift to you. A bird, symbolizing freedom. I want you to always feel free, to be happy, and to know you have the strength to handle anything life throws your way, Lyra."
He pulled back slightly, revealing a silver bird on a chain. Lyra's eyes widened as she gazed at it, touched by the thoughtful gesture.
"It's beautiful," she whispered, her voice full of admiration. "Thank you so much. I also have something for you."
She took his hand gently, slipping a handmade bracelet over his wrist. As she fastened it, she explained, "I wasn't sure what to give you as a parting gift, and I know this isn't anything fancy... But I made this for you. A good luck charm. I hope it brings you success, wherever you go, and that you face no hardships. I've never made one before, so I hope you like it."
Dylan's ears turned a deep shade of red, clearly moved by her gesture. He squeezed her hand and gently kissed her palm.
Lyra felt her face burn with a rush of heat, but Dylan smiled warmly and said, "Thank you. I'll treasure it always."
Blushing, Lyra searched for something else to say but ended up blurting out, "I asked Xavier, and he told me your favorite color is green."
Dylan raised an eyebrow, a smirk tugging at his lips. "That's true. Do you know why?"
Lyra shook her head, intrigued but unsure of what he meant.
"Because," Dylan began, his voice soft, "it's the same color as your eyes."
Lyra's breath caught in her throat, her heart skipping a beat. She couldn't help but smile shyly, touched by his words.
"It's because they are the same color as your eyes."
Lyra's eyes go around at this, as he continues while still holding and caressing her hand,
"Green wasn't initially my favorite color but whenever I saw that color, I was always reminded of your beautiful emerald eyes and the way they sparkle whenever you smile. It won't be a lie to say back then I had a crush on you and you stayed in my heart from that moment forth. A few days ago when I met you, I fell in love with you again with all my heart and soul. I wanted to repress my feelings but it is impossible to hold them back. I admire you so much...."
He sweeps her hair back as he looks at her as if she was his sun, his one and only. His gaze was full of fondness,
"Though it may seem strange even when we stopped receiving each other's letters, I waited the day you would send me one again. If it wasn't for me coming here, I bet I still would have waited for eternity until the day I see you again. It may seem like a childish first love infatuation but you have always been residing in my mind, my thoughts, and my heart…"
At his words, he brings her hand and while clutching it, places it on his chest where his heart was beating loudly.
"Just like how you are my everything, I want to be special to you. I don't know about your first love since there is a lot we don't know about each other, but I desire to be your current and hopefully your last love. I want to live in your heart and your mind even if it's for just a fleeting moment. Just like how I am obsessed with you, I merely hope you will become obsessed with me too. I love you, Lyra."
Dylan's confession brings tears into Lyra's eyes, as she felt feverish. She gulps as she takes in every single word he declared. Before she could respond, the fireworks started.
Lyra turns to gaze in fascination, although if she was being honest, looking at the fireworks was just an excuse to regain her breath. Dylan's words were still playing in her mind on repeat.
Dylan was gazing at Lyra instead of the fireworks which could be seen outside the window next to them. He mumbles,
"Can I this moment act not like a gentleman?"
His question makes Lyra turns towards him as he then wraps his arms around her into a tender embrace. In a deep husk yet soft tone, he whispers as his breath tickles her ears,
"I sincerely hope you do not forget about me after I am gone tomorrow. Please do consider my feelings as I will be waiting for your reply. Although I did say I want to be in your heart or your mind, for just a fleeting moment, I will admit that I am quite impatient and greedy when it comes to you. I want to be the only one for you. I won't ask for a response right now since I perceive it may be too much for you to take in at the moment, but perhaps you may convey it to me the next time we meet. Maybe when you visit me on my birthday?"
Lyra nods in response as Dylan pulled himself away from the hug. He places a tender kiss on a strand of her hair as he replies,
"I will be waiting."
Dylan notes how the fireworks have stopped which means it is now time for the after-party they had planned. He gets up and after clearing his throat adds,
"Shall we go now? Others must be waiting."
"Sure."
Lyra replies as she gets up. Dylan was walking in front of her as she followed him stuck in her thoughts. She knew why Dylan had asked for her answer later on because he knew she was going to reject him. All her life Lyra has lived with calculations, planning every single step of her life. Dylan knew of this. Even if plan A didn't work, she still had multiple backup plans in her mind to follow.
However, Dylan coming to Anemoi was never in her plan. It was an unexpected turn of events that changed what she had planned and she had no backup plan to deal with this. Her feelings for him were also not what she was planning. His confession was also out of what she was expecting. Things were already astray from her plans.
But it is because of these plans that she cannot accept his feelings. While she feels over the moon and wants to quickly accept and confess back, she thinks about how she has to look at the ground reality of things. Dylan is and will remain the second prince i.e., the Grand Duke of Helios. She as a crown princess cannot marry him because in the future if she were to become the empress, she won't be able to leave her kingdom. And she doesn't want him to leave his position and come live here. Even if she felt silly for thinking about marriage so soon since Dylan had just confessed, being a realist, she realizes she has to consider all these things. Although her becoming an empress is a huge what-if. For now, her plans are...quite different....in which there is no space for Dylan...she knows that....she should reject him right away but still her feelings for him won't let her. Gritting her teeth and clenching her fist, she uses her other hand to grab the corner of his sleeves.
Feeling the tug, Dylan halts and turns to look at her, who states,
"...I won't forget you. And I will write to you. I promise. You better write to me as well…"
Dylan who wasn't expecting this was caught off guard. His eyes went round before he fondly smiled thinking to himself that Lyra's gesture seemed so cute. Still smiling, he answers,
"Of course."
"Promise?"
Lyra holds her pinky finger up in the air, which he reciprocates by making a pinky promise and grins,
"Promise."
The next morning, since Dylan was leaving before sunrise, it was only Lyra, Astrid, and Uncle Nabal to say farewell to him. After formally saying goodbye to the rest two.
Dylan diverted his attention toward Lyra.
The said person to whom his gaze was directed, felt extremely awkward and flustered. Dylan's words, and gestures, especially his whispers in her ear were still ringing in her ears and flashing in her memory. Her overgrown feelings for him felt as if they would burst soon.
Dylan slightly bows and places his hand forward.
This was a gesture quite common in their world. Often nobles would bow like this to barely touch their forehead at the back of a royal's hand as a form to show loyalty.
However, unlike those nobles that were of lower status than Lyra, Dylan was also a Prince. Despite Lyra still being in a higher position due to being a Crown Princess, it does not change the fact that Dylan is a Grand Duke 2nd Prince of Helios. Keeping in view his status, he is not required to act in such a way.
Another different thing was that Lyra was not wearing any gloves. Such form an act can only be conducted if the royal woman wears a glove. Without gloves, it would be just him touching the bare back of her hand which is considered an act of intimacy.
It slipped Lyra's mind that she was not wearing any gloves. She reflexively places her hand on his without even thinking about why was he asking for her hand.
Smiling, he plants a soft kiss on the back of her hand before saying,
"Farewell, my princess. I hope to see you soon."
Astrid and Duke Nabal's eyes go wide as they witness the exchange between the two.
Lyra on the other hand could feel the back of her hand turn red even though it was mid of February which meant the weather was fairly cold. Lyra's face had hardened as she stood frozen in that position.
Whereas Dylan nods at them one last time before getting on his horse and then leaving.
Lyra who stood still merely blinked blankly. She was brought back from her thoughts by her sister who hugs her arms and whispered,
"Oh my! What was that? He referred to you as his princess. Is something going on between you two that I am not aware of?"
Duke Nabal who had overheard this, simply coughs to clear his throat and comments,
"Well, that was rather odd."
Flustered, Lyra blurts out while stomping away,
"No. Stop spouting nonsense. It is nothing like that."
Astrid chuckles to herself before following her sister,
"Lyra wait! You can't keep a secret from your sister!"
Meanwhile, Duke Nabal that was left alone, thought to himself deeply while slightly grinning,
"It seems the Prince fancies Lyra. Well, if that is the case then it's not too bad."

After Dylan had gone back, Lyra and him started exchanging letters at least once or twice a week. She would receive Dylan's letters through Solon and would write him back as soon as she could.
