Chapter 11 - It seems like a long time ago (2)

The semester had begun about a few months prior and was almost ending. Charles Wanky had received his admission as he wanted and had commenced his lectures, but the 'beauty' he had seen seemed to have vanished with no trace.

He had no name to cross-check on the admission list that had been posted on the university's online notice board, as his mystery girl had never introduced herself.

Before he started classes at Milas University, he had, for the first time, had a disagreement with his parents since his birth. This would not be the last one, unfortunately.

It would be very much later that his parents would come to know that the main reason for the minor disagreements was because of the girl he had taken a fancy to.

It was no fault of the girl in question that Charles had decided to rebel late in his life, but she would be the one blamed for every and any misfortune that would happen to Charles, whether she had a hand in it or not.

The question remained as to whether she was the more unfortunate one or Charles was.

Just before he left for Milas University that year. In the Wanky household, there was a tense atmosphere.

"Charles dear," his mother, Joy began, "Milas University is just a thirty-minute drive from here, so stay home for the program, and your driver will take you there for your lectures daily," she had stated.

"No", Charles immediately let out.

Joy frowned, "what do you mean, no?"

"It's just as you heard, Mum. I want to have the freedom to study and school as I want, so I do not want to stay home for this. No matter how close we are to the school."

Joy exhaled. She had not expected to have this conversation with her youngest at all. She was practically begging her oldest to leave the house, but he was adamant, and now she had to do the reverse with her youngest. How ironic that sounded even to her. She had been about to leave the room but turned and moved across it closer to where Charles was in his bedroom and pulled him to sit on his queen-sized bed.

The bed sat squarely in the middle of the large room with a chest of drawers on either side of it. It was a befitting, self-contained room with everything he would ever need. It had a relatively large walk-in closet with all the trendy male clothes that any young man would want. Right adjacent to this was his bathroom. On the left side of his bed was an inner room with no door serving as his study area. A sophisticated-looking desktop sat on top of a study table with notes and textbooks stacked neatly atop each other.

"We need you at home so that we can take care of you. This is to make sure that you can study well and free of distractions …" Joy Wanky reasoned, but Charles replied,

"I understand, Mum, but I also believe that, the time away from home will do me good. It will help me so that I know how to be independent." He paused a bit and studied his mother's expression, trying to figure out what he could use for her to understand him.

Of course, Charles Wanky was smart enough not to bring up his dream girl as the main reason why he wanted to … no, he needed to be a resident on campus. How was he supposed to find her if he stayed home and schooled? Even if he did find her, how would their relationship progress if he had a driver and his parents breathing down his neck each day, he went on campus about the time spent there?

Charles had looked at all the pros and cons and prepared his arguments.

"Mum, you still want me to help out at the company, right?"

"What kind of ridiculous question is that?" Joy asked her son a little angrily. Of course, you are going to! If not you, who else? She clutched his hand in hers and studied his face.

"Mum, don't you want me to experience the world on my own? As in to know how to behave and interact with people? Create and build a network of friends of my own that may help me in the near future. In fact, how do you expect me to help handle and manage the company if my worldview is limited to the confines of this house only?"

In as much as Joy Wanky was reluctant to agree to her son's request, his argument was flawless, and she could not punch holes anywhere.

She had to admit that he had beaten her at her own game. A small smile threatened to appear on his face as he saw that he had succeeded, but Charles still held a straight face lest his mother saw through his apparent lies.

In the end, even though he had succeeded with his mum, his reasoning had stirred up a problem which would only manifest later … but not too distant in the future. Never did the mother and son know that the very statement that had justified and convinced his mother would also be the one that changes their life in unexpected ways in the not-so-distant future.

In the end, he was moved into the residence on campus, but Mrs Wanky had made sure that he had acquired a 'lone' room; this meant that he did not share his room nor its facilities with anyone, which was a rarity among the students.

On the topic of the type of room, Mrs Wanky did not budge, so Charles ended up following her arrangements.

He commenced the semester filled with hope that dwindled with time but was never extinguished.

It was beginning to take a toll on Charles after the first few months, but he held firm in his blind faith that he would see her again.

Charles had decided early on, when he gained admission, to study and use the library resources of the Fashion and Décor Institute only. He believed this would give him the most chance of seeing his beauty, the girl he now foolishly referred to as his girlfriend.

… and then he saw her at a time and on a day that he least expected.
