Chapter 7 - homely

I started washing the peas and grandma was taking care of the fish.

so tell me pumpkin, that was her nickname for me, any boy friend?

I blushed, no grandma, nothing of that sort, which guy will even be interested in me?

what do you mean by that? you are the most beautiful girl I've ever seen.

I rolled by eyes as I removed the peas from the pod. you are just saying that because you are my grandma.

you know that's not true, she chuckled. but anyway what others say isn't as powerful as what you say about yourself, what you believe you are.

sure grandma, whatever you say, totally confused at this point.

don't worry pumpkin, you will soon understand what I'm saying.

do tell me, how did you and grandpa, bless his soul, meet? I asked.

it was a long time ago, but I remember it like yesterday. I was a new soprano singer in the choir of our church at that time and your grandfather played the saxophone.

immediately I set my eyes on him, the holy spirit told me that he was going to be my husband. ever since then, everything just kind of fell into place. He met me a few months later after service to confirm what the holy spirit told me that I'm his wife. he proposed 3 days later and we got married 4 months later.

wow, I said as I poured the peas into the pot. who's the holy spirit?

the holy spirit is the third member of the trinity. he is God in spirit form. he lives in us guiding us, rebuking us, teaching us and making us into the perfect image of God the son, Jesus Christ, she answered.

wow, your love life was really a fairytale. no wonder you guys lived so happily together. I cooed.

it wasn't always a bed of roses, she answered but what ever problems came our way we were able to overcome eventually.

the sound of footsteps distracted me and I turned to see who it was.

Anna, watch out grandma shouted, your scarf is on fire.

I screamed and threw off the scarf immediately, one end of it was already engulfed in the fire. luckily the floor was tiled. Grandma grabbed a bowl of water from the sink and poured it on it. the fire alarm went off and we tried to dispel the smoke.

as soon as the water touched the fire, the fire went out and grandma grabbed a pair of tongs and took the scarf outside.

what happened? Jessica suddenly appeared. she must have heard the fire alarm go off.

my scarf caught on fire, I answered glumly. that was my favorite scarf.

thank God it was nothing too serious, grand ma said. let me go and check on the food before it gets burnt. maybe you should just take a break, pumpkin. I will handle the food, maybe play a game or something.

okay grandma, I turned around and went into the living room.

Jessica and Mike followed me inside.

let's play Monopoly, mike suggested.

okay, we agreed.

we played, played and played.

dinner is ready, guys, grandma called.

don't we have to wait for mum? Mike asked.

no need, grandma said. your mum will eat when she gets back. we all sat down at the table.

grace first, grandma said. we all held hands and Grandma started the prayers.

dear heavenly father, thank you for your love and care. thank you for the food you have provided for us, bless it and we pray for provision for those that don't have to give. bring our dear mother back to us and give us joy today.

Amen, we all answered. we started eating.

why do we always pray before eating? Mike asked.

well, my sweet boy, it's not just when we want to eat. prayer should be a major part in our life's, in everything we do. we pray for many reasons, to thank God, make petitions, intercede and others.

the door opened and mum came in.

hey mum, we greeted and Mike ran to hug her aswell.

hey guys, hey mum. how was your first day of school? it was great, we chorused. we made new friends and we even met the neighbors, I said.

wow, you guys really had fun. anyway let me go freshen up and you can tell me all about your day.

grandma went to the kitchen to get her meal.

soon after we heard her elevated voice on the phone.

"I told you that I'm not interested, please can you stop calling me. you are married for christs sake. don't you have any shame?? He was your best friend you know? "

we all looked at each other, we knew who it could it be. Dad only had one best friend.
