Chapter 17 - Cipher

[2022, 2 months after the terrorist attack]

Agent 10: The file you requested, I got it.

Agent 19 receives the file from Agent 10.

Agent 19: Thank you, Agent 10.

Agent 19 starts reading the file, intrigued by its contents.

Code Name: Cipher

Specialty: Hacking

Personal Note: I can hack anything from a coffee machine to the NSA servers.

As Agent 19 continues reading the file, Lia Carter, enters his office.

Lia Carter: What do you have there?

Agent 19, surprised to see anyone in his office, asks: Who are you?

Lia Carter: I'm the one agent you need on your team.

Agent 19: I'm actually considering someone else. And again, who are you?

Lia chuckles and says: You really have no idea, huh?

Agent 19: No idea of what?

Lia pulls out her phone and taps a button. Suddenly, Agent 19's computer turns on, displaying a collection of highly classified intelligence from his past missions.

Agent 19, startled, quickly shuts off his computer and asks: How did you do that?

Lia smirks and says: Code name Cipher. Nice to meet you, Agent 19. I saw that you requested your file on me, so I took the liberty of accessing your computer.

Agent 19, initially defensive, becomes intrigued by Lia's audacity and skills.

Agent 19: What? My requests are classified. I'm a superior officer!

Lia Carter: Not to me, they're not. If you can't even figure out that I hacked into your system, then it shows you're below my level. So, cya never.

Lia confidently walks out of the office,

[Agent 10's office]

Agent 10: Come on, Lia, that's the third time this week.

Lia: What? He is below my level, and you want me to work for him?

Agent 10: Well, there are barely any teams for you to join.

Lia: Oh, come on, can't we just work together?

Agent 10: I work for Agent 47, and we don't need another hacker at the moment.

Lia: Well, keep suggesting my name to agents until I find someone at my level.

Lia receives a notification on her phone.

Lia: Oh, someone is requesting my file right now.

Agent 10: Who is it?

Lia: White Hat?

Agent 10: Who? I never gave him your name.

Lia: Well, search him up.

Agent 10: One second, let me pull his file.

Code name: White Hat CLASSIFIED

Agent 10: It's all classified.

Lia: Even for you?

Agent 10: Yeah, none of the files are showing up, only his code name.

Lia pulls out her phone and starts hacking into White Hat's system.

Lia: Well, whoever he is, I just hacked into his system. Time to pay him a visit.

[White Hat's office]

As Lia walks into the office, she sees no one but a 16-year-old sitting on the couch, engrossed in his phone.

Lia: Who are you?

The kid remains silent, focused on his phone, ignoring Lia's question.

Lia: Well, don't snitch.

Lia walks over to White Hat's computer, intending to upload malware that will allow her to control his PC.

The kid: I wouldn't do that if I were you.

Lia: Yeah, whatever you say.

As Lia tries to upload the malware, an alarm suddenly goes off.

Lia: Shit, shit, shit!

The kid: I told you.

Lia: Shut up, kid.

Lia attempts to disable the alarm but realizes it requires a password.

Lia: Requires a password!?

The kid walks up to the PC and effortlessly types in the password, causing the alarm to disable. He then returns to the couch.

Lia, confused, asks: Who are you???

The kid replies: White Hat.

Lia, now more confused than ever, asks: You are White Hat? But you're so...

The kid cuts Lia off and says: Young?

Lia: No, short.

White Hat: Never heard that one before.

Lia: Well, White Hat, I guess you have no idea who I am.

White Hat: Yeah, no, I don't.

Lia tries to showcase her hacking skills by pulling up the classified intel on White Hat's PC from when she hacked his PC remotely, but it doesn't work.

Lia: Why isn't this stupid thing working?

White Hat: Well, Lia Carter, code name Cipher, it seems your malware isn't working because I hacked you.

Lia: What?!

White Hat: While you were so desperately trying to hack into my computer, I traced where the hack was sent from. I saw it was sent from Agent 10's office. Now, I know Agent 10 is good, but she goes by the books too much too actually hack another Black Watch agent. So, I realized the only other person would be you.

Lia: So, wow, you found out my name and code name. Anyone with more than 2 brain cells can access the main server and get that info. It's not even classified.

White Hat: That's true.

As Lia turns around, ready to leave the office, White Hat asks her a question.

White Hat: Just one question.

Lia pauses and looks back at him, curious about what he's going to ask.

Lia: What is it?

White Hat: Who's Ethan?

Lia's expression changes to one of surprise and anger, her guard instantly going up.

Lia: How do you know about Ethan?

White Hat: I hacked your therapist's notes. Surprisingly, he keeps them on his locked computer. You talk about Ethan quite a lot, it seems.

Lia's anger intensifies, her voice trembling with fury.

Lia: You little...

White Hat:Is he your ex boyfriend or?

Lia: How dare you invade my privacy like that

White Hat, seemingly unfazed by her anger, continues to provoke her.

White Hat (mimicking Lia): "How I miss Ethan. I wish he was here right now."

Lia's eyes widen in disbelief and anger as she realizes that White Hat has not only invaded her privacy but has also been mocking her personal thoughts and feelings.

Lia: That's enough!

In a fit of rage, Lia storms over to White Hat and forcefully grabs his phone. With a swift and powerful motion, she slams it against the ground, shattering it into pieces.

The room falls into a tense silence, broken only by the sound of the shattered phone's fragments scattering across the floor.

[Lia's new house]

Lia enters her new house, a place she recently moved into after the tragic events that took her parents' lives and seemingly claimed the life of her brother, Ethan. It has been two months since she received the devastating news of Ethan's death. The memories of their last moments together haunt her every day.

As she walks through the unfamiliar rooms, Lia can't help but feel a sense of emptiness. The house lacks the warmth and familiarity of the home she shared with Ethan and their parents. Everything here is a constant reminder of their absence.

She enters her private office, a small space she has set up for herself in the new house. The room is bare, with only a desk, a few personal belongings, and a framed photograph of Ethan. It's the only connection she has to her lost brother.

But then she hears a noise, causing her to tense up. Lia's instincts kick in, and she quickly grabs her gun from the drawer of her desk. With cautious steps, she walks towards the source of the sound, ready to defend herself.

As she turns a corner, her eyes widen in surprise and disbelief. Standing before her is White Hat, the enigmatic hacker she encountered earlier. Anger and confusion mix within her as she confronts him.

Lia: You?! What are you doing here?

White Hat: Hi, Lia. I came to apologize for what happened at my office.

Lia: By breaking into my house? That's your way of apologizing?

White Hat: Yeah, I admit it was a mistake. I should have just waited until tomorrow morning. I apologize for invading your privacy.

Lia: Whatever, you can get out now

White Hat: and I found something you might want to hear.

Lia: About what?

White Hat: About your brother.

Lia: What do you mean?

White Hat: By the time the bomb exploded, it should have taken the agents who picked you up about 1 hour to get to you from HQ.

Lia: Right, so how long did it take them to get to me?

White Hat: 10 minutes.

Lia: That doesn't make sense.

White Hat: Exactly. So, I did some digging, and I found out that the GPS stopped at a location near your old house about 20 minutes before the bomb even exploded.

Lia's eyes widen in shock as White Hat's revelation sinks in. Her mind races, trying to process the implications of what he just said. Could it be true? Were the agents somehow involved in the attack on her parents and the disappearance of her brother?

Lia: Are you saying... the agents knew about the bomb?

White Hat: It certainly seems that way. They were at a location near your old house when the bomb went off. It's highly unlikely that it was a mere coincidence.

Lia's anger mixes with a growing sense of betrayal. The very people she trusted, the ones who were supposed to protect her and her family, may have played a role in their tragedy.

Lia: How did you find this out?

White Hat: I have my ways. Let's just say hacking into classified systems is not the only thing I'm good at.

Lia paces back and forth, her mind racing with questions and uncertainties. She needs to find the truth, to uncover the full extent of what happened to her family and why. But she can't do it alone.

Lia: We need to investigate further. We need evidence to prove their involvement.

Lia: What do we do now?

White Hat: We gather information, piece together the puzzle, and find the truth. But we need to be careful. If their is a mole in black watch no one can know

Lia looks at White Hat, determination burning in her eyes.

Lia: I'm not backing down. Not until I find out the truth and bring justice to my family.
