As it turned out, quitting my job was pretty anticlimactic. My boss wasn't even upset or anything. I decided that since I didn't really have much to do right now, I was just going to take care of this today in person. When i handed him my badge, he simply told me to have a good life, and wished me well.
"You too man. Thanks." I had said, and I truly meant it.
In a world full of assholes and crazy people, this guy was just a regular dude who would do anything for his wife and kids. A simple yet rewarding life. I was actually starting to fesl the same thing, if not to that extent. The thought of someone hurting or even harrassing my girls made me feel a strong feeling of protectiveness. They both made me feel... really happy.
Speaking of, I waited to come here so I could see Liz and John at break time, as I planned to tell everyone right away that I was getting a new job. I could have just called them, but I was more of an in person kinda guy, and I didn't have anything else to do today. I planned on going to see Nadia after this as well.
I walked into the break room, and many heads turned to look at me. They all turned away just as quickly, except for two. John was at a table with Liz, and I was glad to see that he was being nice, and keeping her company while I wasn't there.
"Hey y'all." I said as I neared the table.
Before I could even sit down, Liz got up, not even bothered by those around us, and approached me. Even in a human disguise, this woman was mesmerizing. She walked to stand right in front of me, a big smile on her face, before standing on her tiptoes and leaning her head up to me. My reaction came without hesitation, as I leaned down, and claimed a kiss. It wasn't necessarily chased, but it wasn't short either.
"Hey handsome." She said as the kiss ended.
"Hello sweetheart." I said, and while it was a little lame, the words came unbidden, and a bright smile lit up her face.
Then I looked over at John, who's mouth actually hung open. Even past him, some of the others in the breakroom looked shocked, and many of the guys around my age looked envious and angry, not that gave a shit. This was my woman, and let me tell you... what an honor that was.
"I thought you said it wasn't like that!" John said, clearly confused.
I just shrugged.
"Well, yeah, it is now. Anyways, how are you both?" I asked.
John threw up his hands.
"Oh, you know, just apparently experiencing the crippling loneliness by myself now apparently, but I'm great." He replied, and I just smiled.
"Nice. Well that's good to hear." I retorted, then looked at Liz. She patted my arm.
"I'm fine. Bored, honestly. I didn't think you'd come in today. Did you miss me?" She asked teasingly.
I only turned slightly red this time. Progress!
"Well, yeah, but I also came in so I could quit." I said nonchalantly.
Both of their eyes opened wide.
"You quit??" They asked in unison.
I smiled.
"Yes. I got offered a new job today, and I took it." I said, but I obviously couldn't tell John what it was, so I had to lie a little bit, "I'll be doing... security downtown."
Okay, so I lied a lot a bit, but the look I gave at Liz conveyed that I wasn't telling the full story, and she just nodded at me. I'd tell her fully later.
"Well, that's nice I guess. More pay?" John asked, and a laugh came unbidden from my mouth.
"Oh yeah." I said, and that part I didn't have to lie about at least.
"That's great! I'm happy for you babe. You going to tell Nadia?" Liz asked, and John looked at me with narrowed eyes.
"Nadia? What, you have another girlfriend too?" John asked, and my silence, and Liz's little smirk made his eyes widen.
"No..." John said, and he sounded like I just eradicated his bloodline.
"Yes." Liz said with pride, "My best friend, and Sid's other girlfriend."
John actually looked like he was going to pass out, and the looks from the people listening in on us were admittedly hilarious. I scratched the back of my head.
"Last week was interesting for me." I said.
"Oh you don't fucking say." John said, although now he just looked defeated.
"I'll have to introduce you to her some time." I replied.
John looked at me, and then at Liz, and then he shook his head.
"I'm gonna get back to work." John said, standing up, and then walking away with his shoulders sagging.
"Is he going to be okay?" Liz asked with concern.
"I... think so?" I said, although I wasn't entirely sure myself.
Damn, if this was how my best friend acted when I told him about my relationship status, I couldn't even begin to imagine how mom and dad will react. My mom always told me that I needed to find a good woman, and well... I doubled her projections, so to speak.
Actually, now that I thought about it, my dad always said I'd be stealing girls hearts left and right. Technically, he was not wrong. But that went both ways, because goddamn it, every time I looked at those girls, my heart almost exploded. I feel like our relationship was progressing much faster than I expected, and it really hasn't been all that long. It felt right to me though, like this was how it was supposed to be for me. I didn't understand the hows and whys, but I cared about them just as much as anyone important to me, like my parents.
"I need to go and see them soon. And it would probably be best to bring Liz and Nadia."
The bell rang indicating that break time was over, and Liz sighed. Without prompting, she walked up to me and nuzzled into my chest. I was getting dangerously close to cuteness overload currently, but it felt so nice and comforting. I walked my arms around her and inhaled her scent. She truly did smell like a nice summer day.
"I don't wanna." Liz groaned, and I chuckled.
"You could just come with me to go and see Nadia." I joked, but she actually lit up at my suggestion.
"Yes! That's a great idea. Without you being here anymore, and the fact that no one else here seems to have our certain... condition, I don't really need to stay here anymore. It's kinda funny how you find people like in the most random of places." Liz said, and I jist stared at her.
"You don't have to quit because of me." I said, but she just pouted at me, which almost sent me into cardiac arrest.
"Did you like working here?" She asked me in a deadpan voice.
"Well... no. Not at all. It just paid the bills." I admitted, and she smirked at me.
"Exactly. I don't need to work her to make money. I was only here to find people like you, and now that you're leave, well, I can just go back to healing people. Magic can truly fix just about anything." She said, and thag made me pause.
"Anything? Like, could it fix something like cancer?" I asked, and she nodded.
"Oh yes. That's pretty straight forward. The magic basically replaces all of the cancerous cells with new, healthy cells." She said.
"Huh. That sounds world changing." I muttered, and she smiled.
"I do what I can, but I can'tjust go around magically curing diseases that don'thave cures. It would be too obvious. Enough of that though, come on." She said, and she turned around, and it looked like she was intentionally swaying her hips just for me.
That's a stupid thought. Of course she was, and I was all for it. This woman had an ass that would make a Greek goddess jealous.
"Lord give me strength."
