Until today, I knew nothing about my mother's family. She kept everything about her former life hidden and I didn't try to look into her past. None of it mattered before.
But now, I want to know why my grandmother showed up at the hospital and didn't stick around long enough for anyone else to know about her.
So I scour Mother's diary for the clues she left behind and have Francesco run the address she wrote on the first page.
"This house belonged to Rafael Rivera. He passed away five years ago."
I'm disappointed that the first person I found who could likely be my family is already dead, but it's not like I was going to rekindle some old familial relationship. I don't want to put anyone in danger.
"And his family?" I ask.
"His widow, Lily Rivera, still lives in the house. He had two daughters, Felicia and Paula. Felicia ran away from home twenty-five years ago. And get this…" he looks at me. "She was pregnant."
