Large amount of archers are already stationed on the walls, they are just laying low and waiting for the enemies to come themselves. The soldiers were already waiting at the entrance of the gate with tensed expression, normally they would prepare traps and so to slow to enemies but given the time, preparing the weapons and themselves were the best they could do. Ronaldo also understood that so he was very anxious about this war, though it was lessened when he saw the figure of Ascella and his group. He is probably his biggest hope right now, just gaining a strong mage on his side already aleviated some of the pressure. Ronaldo could not say that he didn't expect this thing because he knew what he did. That is also the reason why he focused on war supplies immediately after he took the rule back. He was just surprised that the number were lesser than he thought, he expected a number reaching 50,000 to march on his town because of its value.
