Chapter 58 - Everybody loves misunderstandings!

Under the serene glow of the moonlight, the streets surrounding the Adventurer's Guild was bustling and jostling with rowdy pedestrians. People of all Races and walks of life swayed drunkenly as they stumbled home or into different shops. The majority of the traffic was directed at the Guild, which was operating at full capacity despite the late hours. Of course, this was quite the normal sight at Sky Cross City.

The interior of the Guild was carved out like a grand hall. Rows of wooden benches and tables were orderly set up, the majority of them occupied by Adventurers. At even intervals were tall notice boards strapped with colourful pieces of paper. Adventurers were crowding around them, pushing and shoving to get at the pieces of paper.

Near the back was a line of desks occupied by what seemed to be Guild staff. These men and women wore either suits or skirts, all coloured a light green with gold stripes and a hint of purple forming a flower outline around the edges. On their chest was a badge with the word "Staff" written on it. They were busy talking to Adventurers or filling out forms, and behind them seemed to be equally busy with more staff members running around and shouting to each other.

All this greeted Endyr as she stepped into the hall. 'The atmosphere is quite lively and cosy. I was half expecting something a bit more run down, but this Guild Hall seems comparable to that Harvest Church. I guess I'm still prejudiced from my time as a Denizen.'

When the mortals and Gods across the Multiverse polluted Euphrosyne's ideals, "She" had been incredibly distraught. And while the Denizens were never exactly close to each, as "They" lacked the ability to feel empathy and most forms of love, "They" could still get angry on the behalf of another Denizen. As such, Endyr never had a good impression of Adventurers and their organizations, no matter the planet.

Drinking in the sights, Endyr made her way to the least busy desk and patiently waited her turn. As she did, several people looked over at her but then turned away. A few stared for a bit longer before also diverting their attention. Only one or two kept their eye on Endyr as she slowly moved up the line.

'Is it because of my small stature, or do they possess some type of Analysis or Instinct type Skill? If its the latter, I presume they can sense an abnormal amount of danger from me. I can't tell anything special about them from their clothes or company, so maybe they have other motives...'

Endyr was acutely aware of all the gazes watching her as she neared the desk. She was thankful that the robe she was wearing wasn't anything extravagant or eye-catching, as many of the Adventurers around her wore similar things. Before entering, she had also adjusted her Status and hidden a few Skills, hopefully stopping anyone with particularly keen senses finding something strange about her.

'Anti-Analysis is truly an EX Rank Skill. And from what I have gathered, it only exists at EX Rank. The closest thing to it is the SSS Rank Skill "Nyx's Veil" which can obscure and alter Stats but not to the extent of my Skill. I wonder if Analysis also only exists as an EX Skill...'

Seeing that it was her turn, Endyr stopped her thoughts from wandering and steeled herself. After checking that everything was fine, she stepped forward to the female receptionist and made her intentions known.

...

Suzan had sent away her latest customer and was filling out the form required for him, calling out to the next in line at the same time. "Next!"

Out of the corner of her eye, Suzan saw a new figure shuffle forward, one wrapped in a brown robe that concealed their figure and face. Seeing this, she sighed internally and called out to them in a droll tone. "What can I do for you today, Miss ....?"

"Miss Syndrine"

Suzan looked up as the figure pulled back their hood, revealing hair as white as snow and eyes that shone like polished amethyst. She temporarily forgot to breath, so dazzled was she by the beauty of the girl across from her. Yet her training kicked in quickly, allowing her to flash a professional smile and conjure a form from under the desk. "Please fill this out then, Miss Syndrine."

The young girl took it and the pen offered, skimming over the contract and filling in all the spaces. Upon being handed the form back, Suzan frowned slightly as she noticed blanks.

[Name: Endyr Syndrine]

[Age: 14 (Human Years)]

[Gender: Female]

[Origin: ----]

[Affinity: -----]

[Religion: ----]

The form had more than that, but these were the most important parts. Suzan looked at the girl across from her-Endyr Syndrine-and pushed the form back.

"I am sorry Miss, but the rest of the form needs to be filled out" she requested with a polite tone, her face the perfect display of professionalism. Endyr looked at her without saying anything for a moment before opening her mouth. "Is this a required act for registration?"

Her tone was calm and only slightly cold, yet Suzan felt shivers run down her spine. She almost broke out into cold sweat, as her instincts told her that she had just encountered a natural predator. As a relatively senior receptionist at Sky Cross Guild, Suzan had met many famous and powerful people over the years. Yet few had caused a reaction like this little girl.

Seeing the tremors that shook Suzan's body, Endyr sighed ands retracted the form, filling out the empty spots. She then tossed it back across the table and crossed her arms. "There, the whole form is filled out. Can we move on to the next part now?"

Suzan regained control over herself as she cautiously eyed the young girl standing there nonchalantly. She was far too experienced to shrug what had just happened as as illusion, and she was entertaining the idea of simply kicking this girl out. Yet her standards as a professional forced her to smile and ring a bell, standing up as a male staff member walked over.

"This young girl wants to register, so you will need to hold down the fort for a while" Suzan stated, as the man nodded and took her seat. Suzan then gestured for Endyr to follow her into the back, past the hustle and bustle of staff members running around trying to sort paperwork. Leading her to a room with a stone door, Suzan swung it open to reveal a man dozing off against the wall.

Sighing softly, Suzan walked over to him and slapped him over the head, causing the man to squawk and fall over ins hock. As he stared up at Suzan with droopy eyes, she began to scold him. "Victor, how many times have you been told to stop sleeping on the job?! Just because it's common knowledge you use the Appraisal Post to slack off doesn't mean you can just drop all pretences!"

Victor flinched and shakily stood up as he tried, and failed, to ruffle his hair into shape before nervously smiling. "I'm sorry Miss Suzan, I truly am. It won't happen again, I promise! And...you were just exaggerating when you said everybody knew I was slacking off, right? Vice-Leader Philadro surely hasn't heard these...rumours...right?!"

Near the end, Victor started to sound desperate as he stared at Suzan, but she simply snorted and turned away. She then ushered Endyr into the room and pulled back a curtain, revealing a marble ball on a stone pedestal. "This is an Appraisal Stone2 Suzan explained, even though Endyr recognised it from the one Raphaniel and Jace had used on them in the manor.

Victor cleared his throat and stepped forward, his sluggishness vanishing as a serious and sombre look appeared instead. If Endyr hadn't personally just watched him be verbally beaten down by the petit and dainty Suzan, she almost would have believed him to be a reliable professional.

"This Appraisal Stone will allow us to view you Status, with consent of course. We will use this to grasp your current level and to see if you filled in that little form correctly. Depending on what shows up, we will assign you an Adventurer Rank. It follows the usual Ranking, so from, SSS all the way to F. But don't get confused: your raw power doesn't decide your Adventure Rank. Sure, it's a big contributor, but the max you can achieve from this is D Rank. If you want to climb higher, then you will need to complete a minimum amount of missions."

Endyr listened to Victor's words silently before stepping up to the Stone. She held out her hand and pressed it against the smooth marble, causing it to glow slightly and words to be projected onto the air.

As they read down her Status, Victor and Suzan turned stiller and stiller. By the time they reached the end, the room was covered in a blanket of silence, and the very air felt stuffy. After submitting her Status, Endyr stepped back and silently waited for the two adults to come back to their senses.

Victor snapped back to reality slightly faster than Suzan, and the two scrutinised Endyr with sharp eyes. As she stared back at them with equal sharpness, Victor cracked a smile and bowed slightly.

"Hello young miss. My name is Victor Erstwhile, a senior member of the Sky Cross Guild. This here is Suzan Collend, another senior member. You needn't worry: the results of all examinations can only be viewed by the Vice-Leaders of a Guild Branch and higher. As such, the amount of people who know of your circumstances will remain very few."

Endyr raised an eyebrow at his words as she spoke. "And what circumstances you that be?" she asked softly.

Victor flashed her another smile as he straightened up. "You are not the first to come our way, Young Miss. Many Noble children, either bastards or simply too young, are pushed out of the family home and forced to fend for themselves. Of course, fallen Nobility is also included amongst those we deal with. Your identity shall be hidden to the best of our ability during your tenor as an Adventurer, we promise you. As of now, please wait by the desk you visited. Your form will be sent out shortly."

Endyr watched him with her purple eyes before nodding indecipherably. Still maintaining his smile, Victor opened the door and gestured for her to leave. Endyr did so without a word, her expression remaining the same throughout the whole examination. Once she was gone, Victor closed the door and conveyed a message to Suzan with his eyes.

..........

Outside the Appraisal Room, Endyr let out a sigh and rubbed her glabella. She looked over her shoulder once before pulling up her hood and walking back towards the front off the Guild. As she did so, her lips began to twitch.

'Indeed, misunderstandings are part of a fantasy story after all...'
