The machine was turned on, and went kablooey(exploded), the machine had been sabotaged, the explosion was immense wiping out the lot of cities.

Mike, a reckless teenager, fortunately was gifted, having learned about the injustice of his father death, saw the gift as a lifetime opportunity to avenge his father's death.
