Chapter 13 - Goodbye?

"I will go get you girls some drinks," Jake said to the girls after they were seated and strolled away after they had both given him a nod.

"He is so handsome and cool, isn't he?" Charlotte asked Haewon as they watched him leave.

"I don't know. I'm not interested. I think his attitude from the beginning turned me off already," Haewon said dismissively.

"Yet here you are as his prom date," Charlotte teased, and Haewon scowled.

"I told you why I agreed already," Haewon said defensively.

"Why don't I believe you? I think there is more to it. Perhaps you're attracted…."

"I'm not. Trust me, after tonight, I doubt we are ever going to cross paths again or have any reason to talk to each other. High school is over," Haewon said matter of factly, and before Charlotte could respond, Jake returned, holding two disposable cups in his hands.

He handed one over to Haewon and the other to Charlotte.

"What's in this?" Haewon asked as she looked into the cup.

"Nonalcoholic wine," Jake responded before walking away again to get himself something to drink.

"I think he's charming. Maybe you just need to forgive him for being a jerk and…"

"Let's not talk about him anymore, please," Haewon interrupted Charlotte as she took a sip from her cup.

"Alright," Charlotte said, and they both relaxed and watched those dancing on the dance floor.

Jake returned and joined them, sitting down between them once again since Haewon had made it clear he was to give them both equal attention.

Soon, the music changed to something much slower, allowing couples to slow dance with each other.

"Why don't we go to the dance floor, Lottie? What's a prom night without dancing?" Haewon asked Charlotte, and Jake took that as his cue to speak, so he turned to Haewon.

"It would be a shame for two ladies to hit the dance floor when they have a male escort. Why don't you dance with me first, and then I can dance with Charlotte afterward?" Jake offered, and Haewon glanced at Charlotte to see if she was okay with the idea, and Charlotte smiled and gave her a nod.

"Let's do that then," Haewon said, and Jake rose.

"May I have this dance?" He asked as he extended a hand to her, and Haewon smiled as she placed her hand on his so he could pull her up.

Their hands tingled the moment they touched, and a ripple of attraction sparked between them, causing them to look at each other for one awkward moment before proceeding to the dance floor.

By the time they got to the dance floor, Perfect by Ed-Sheeran was playing, so they both closed the distance between them.

Haewon felt a bit awkward as Jake's hand went around her waist, and he pulled her closer, making her look up at him since he was much taller than she was.

Her heart skipped a beat when their gaze met, but neither of them looked away as they began swaying their bodies to the rhythm of the music.

Haewon had no idea what she was feeling or why her heart was racing so fast, but something about being so close to Jake and looking into his compelling dark eyes made her want to stand on tiptoes and brush her lips against him.

Looking into her eyes, Jake felt like something was stuck in his throat. Unlike Haewon, he was not so naive as to not know what was happening to him.

He was attracted to her. He was physically attracted to her. He had no idea if it was a recent development or if it was because his grandmother had spent years making her the center of his life, or if it was just because she looked so captivating tonight.

Whichever it was, he wasn't sure what to do about it right now. Physical attraction was okay since he would need it to woo her and sweep her off her feet. He knew he could not feel anything else for her apart from physical attraction, so it was probably best he at least felt attracted to her.

The moment the song ended, Haewon stepped away from him quickly, "Thank you for the dance," She said with a forced smile as she quickly returned to her seat, leaving him to follow her.

Once Jake joined them, he stretched out his hand to Charlotte, "May I have this dance?" He asked, and she smiled as she placed her hand in his, and Jake led her away.

When they got on the dance floor, Jake pulled Charlotte closer the same way he had done to Haewon, wanting to see if he would react to her the same way he had reacted to Haewon, but he felt nothing as they began to dance slowly.

When Charlotte was certain that she had her back to Haewon, and they were close enough for nobody to hear her, she looked at Jake. "Why did you not tell me that you were taking her to prom?"

"I don't believe you're in a position to ask me questions or that I owe you an explanation. Stick to the business you're being paid to take care of," Jake said coldly.

Charlotte swallowed past the lump that formed in her throat at his words, and she gave him a nod without saying anything else.

After the party was over, they dropped Charlotte off at her home first before going to Haewon's house.

Once the limo stopped outside her house, Haewon did not make a move to leave immediately and they both sat in silence for a moment.

"Thanks for being our prom date. It was an amazing night. You made me and Charlotte very happy. And trust me it's not so easy to take two ladies out and leave them both feeling satisfied," Haewon said with a bright smile and Jake smiled.

"I am glad that I did not disappoint you. Thank you too for being so agreeable tonight," Jake said, and Haewon smiled.

They both smiled at each other for a moment before Haewon opened the door and stepped out of the car, and Jake stepped out after her to escort her to the door.

Once they got to the door, they both stood there awkwardly for a moment, "Goodnight," Haewon said, and Jake hesitated for a moment and then leaned forward and kissed her cheek making her heart skip a beat.

"Goodbye!" He said, as he turned and returned to the car.

Why Goodbye? Haewon mused as she watched him get into the limo.

Jake got into the car but the driver didn't pull away until Haewon stepped into the house.

As the car drove off, Jake sighed. According to his grandmother, this was the last time he was going to be seeing her in a long while.

He couldn't help but wonder how long it would take before they crossed paths again, and just how their next meeting was going to happen.

He looked forward to it. He looked forward to meeting Kim Haewon again.
