Chapter 35 - Erudition

Since I started to feel a lot better after a couple days, my lessons that had been pushed back for far too long, due to dad's insistence, have finally resumed.

I felt excited to be busy and learning again. However Nicolas Leox wasn't too happy about my long absence and made that known very clearly.

Of course he couldn't voice his discontent out loud considering the fact that these absences were accounted for my Lord Grey himself, but he was still unhappy nonetheless.

I could sense his cold energy the minute I stepped into the library (which is the new location of our classes if I didn't mention it before) and could tell he would be in a foul mood.

Mr. Leox looked as handsome as ever in his grey ensemble. As per usual, he exuded a dignified and intimidating air and his attitude didn't seem to change in the last two weeks I hadn't seen him.

"I will not be scolding you for your prolonged absence considering they were urgent, but I will not be tolerating this again!" He said fuming.

I couldn't help but roll my eyes at him.

I can't believe I even missed this guy for a brief second. What in the world was I thinking.

"I am sure you can take it up with my dad if a situation like this occurs again, my dad loves being complained too." I said, not even masking my sarcasm this time.

If there's one thing I learned from dealing with people like Nicolas Leox, was that the minute you tolerated their antics, they wouldn't stop. Actually they would be much worse, so it's best to show them you cannot be bothered to deal with them.

And as I anticipated, Mr. Leox didn't say anything and continued on with his lessons.  As for right now, we moved on from history briefly and started focusing on geography.

While Mr. Leox was explaining the agriculture in the Southern parts of Novellus, my mind drifted to the conversation I had with Johannes and Amethyst.

We had briefly discussed about the North and I forgot to ask dad about why we moved from the North to the South.

Since I could no longer contain my curiousity, and hated even more to be kept in the dark, I decided to ask my teacher about it.

"Well, I am not one hundred percent certain about the reason, but it could have been due to the sudden change in climate at the time." He simply said.

Seeing me raise my eyebrows in confusion, he went on to explain in greater detail.

" This shouldn't come to you as a surprise but the North has always been one of the coldest places in the Novellus Kingdom, heck, you can even go as far as so say, it's the coldest place in the world due to its close proximity to the snowy mountains and of course its altitude.

But a couple of decades ago, there was an outbreak of snow creatures more specifically ice monsters that plagued the areas causing the temperatures to decrease exponentially. It was to the point that it became almost unbearable even for the locals to live in.

It wasn't until the the two great families of the North set their differences aside and got together to fight the ice monsters that the outbreaks were contained and temperatures went back to normal.

Since it was a traumatic experience, it could be one of the reason's why the Grey's ended up leaving and migrating South. There could also have been other factors such as disputes among the Northern families.

Of course this happened before my time, so I wouldn't know but I would wager that it had to have been one of the two reasons. You'll have to ask your father for more information on that.

I could also consult one of my colleagues who specializes in Northern studies if you would like as well."

"Thank you but your explanation was more than enough. But I'll ask my dad for more information later." I smiled at him gratefully.

I was quite surprised by his last statement.

I always took Mr. Leox has the type who would be too proud to ask others for help, and I was even more surprised at his admittance to not knowing something.

This guy was full of surprises and the more I found out about his character, the more respect I had for him.

"Well then, we are now off course because of your incessant questions! I'll be assigning you more homework to make up for lost time."

I couldn't help but laugh. He is rough around the edges, but he is a great teacher.

"Yes sir!" I said enthusiastically. Which he raised his eyebrows in surprise.

He then cleared his throat. "Right, let us continue."

The rest of the lesson was rather uneventful, but I learned a lot about the geography of the Kingdom.

Despite it being only a small chunk of a larger nation, Novellus was still vast in size and resources.

Mr. Leox promised that once we finished going over the geography of Novellus, we would explore all the other Kingdoms as well, which I was looking forward to.

Class then ended and I went to meet dad in his office. I knocked on the door softly and heard his voice coming out of the room.

"Come in" he said.

I opened the door slowly and peeked my head through looking around and making sure there wasn't anyone else there.

Typically, Emille would be by dad's side to assist him in his work, but today was one of those rare occasions where Emille was out. So I took the opportunity to come in and skipped my way to the comfy sofa.

It was only once I plopped down that he asked: "How were your lessons today?" I turned to face him and smiled.

"Everything went well. Mr. Leox was a little angry about me missing a few classes but he got over it rather quickly." I laughed.

"Right. I did make sure to inform him but he didn't hide his discontent.

He is a rather hard headed fellow, but a decent man nonetheless.

It's the reason why I choose him to be your teacher… are things going well with him?" He asked a little hesitantly.

"Nothing bad to report dad. He is a really good teacher, I wouldn't want anyone else teaching me."

"Good." He said and went back to his papers. I then heard a knock on the door, and Gwendolyn came in with a tray filled with sandwiches and desserts. She also set an assortment of teas to drink as well.

She gave me a small smile and told dad to call if there's anything else we need and left.

I didn't hesitate to reach for the little tarts in front of me but before I could even grab one, a napkin containing two sandwiches was presented before me.

I looked up startled and dad was facing me. Just when did he even get here?! I thought to myself.

"You should eat the sandwiches before your dessert." He simply said, before sitting down and grabbing some tea.

I looked at him wide eyed and didn't blink for awhile before taking a bite of the sandwich in my hands.

During this time, Donellan had been observing his son and there a small smile on his face upon seeing his son's reaction.

"Cute" was the first word he thought when looking at him.

"Oh, right. Daddy, there's something I wanted to ask you."
