The band chooses this moment to start their sound check. Guitars and drums drive the four of you out into the hall to continue your conversation. Under cover of the band's noise, Kayla says, "I didn't expect Janice to needle Bill the way she does."
"Kayla speaks truth," Alex says.
In the hall, Bill asks Kayla, "Did it take you long to settle into your position here?"
"In part, though it is an ongoing process," Kayla says.
"How long can it take?" Janice asks. "All you need is a pencil and some paper, right?"
Kayla's eyes tighten in what you recognize as annoyance. "It isn't quite that simple."
"It can't have been that hard for you, either, Bomomsay Clestenrogo, right? As long as you get someone to lug to your office all those books you humanities types hoard."
Alex says, "I believe she's being disrespectful."
