Listen, I can't keep calling you 'alien' or 'hey, you.' What should I call you?"
"No name."
"Right, I got that the first time. But I can't talk in scents that aren't scents, so what would you like to be called?"
"I am lodger, yes? That may be best."
"You want me to call you 'the Lodger'?"
"If not, you pick."
"I'll call you Alex."
Alex does the mental equivalent of a shrug. "Is fine."
You shouldn't have named them, because you have to get rid of them. They're a breakthrough.
Breakthroughs, when a sentient being from another universe forces its way into your head, is one of the dangers of practicing magic. Most intelligences crush a practitioner's mind, not out of malice but out of sheer incompatibility. The Practicum's rule is to destroy anyone who suffers one, as the alien intelligence has access to the practitioners' magic without their years of control. Three practitioners in Stockholm suffered breakthroughs a few years ago. The creatures that had taken them over accidentally burned the entire school building. One escaped and had to be hunted down.
But you're still you. The intelligence in your head hasn't taken you over. That Alex hasn't destroyed your mind is a minor miracle. That you two can communicate is another. But the situation can't continue.
