Gabriel removes a near-feral book from its protective case. He's going to apply a pattern to it, as that's more straightforward than operating the detection pattern to capture all the information you're hoping for.
"I'm ready when you are," you tell Gabriel.
He breathes deeply, then places the book on the pattern. He lifts a pattern meant to copy information from a book and stares at it.
The book rocks back and forth. It doesn't like that. Invisible pattern energy crackles across the room. The protection patterns take on a faint glow, almost drowned out by the butcher paper pattern's much stronger light. You kneel, shaping the energy flow to capture fluctuations in the pattern energy as marks on the butcher paper for later study.
It only takes a minute for you to get what you need. "Okay, shut it down," you call.
Gabriel doesn't respond.
