"I know you told me a little about the research on summoning backlash you and Dr. Blankenship were working on, but could you tell me more details?" you ask. As you say Blankenship's name, you feel his presence in the office again. You've got to clean out his old boxes.
"Whoof, sure." Gabriel looks up at the ceiling, gathering his thoughts. "Dr. Blankenship wanted to reduce summoning backlash."
When he doesn't go on, you control your impatience, as that won't get answers out of Gabriel. "How did he intend to do that?"
"His theory was that summoning backlash was dominated by mismatches between our universe and whatever one we summon from. The more different the other universe is from ours, the worse the backlash."
You nod. "It's plausible."
"Yeah, but it's wrong."
