"I'm surprised your new colleague was so direct with you," Kayla says. She gives you a level stare that suggests she's not buying what you're selling.

"I'm surprised they didn't see the value in this lunch," Kayla says. Her tone could keep you dry in a monsoon. You can't tell if she's being deadly serious or deeply sarcastic.
"Still!" Dr. Lewis gives a little clap. "You two did, which I appreciate. And we can have an illuminating and stimulating lunch even without the others. See what each of us, hah, brings to the table, so to speak."
