Practitioners of old used wool tapestries because that was how you made large, patterned wall hangings that you could roll up and store. Since wool fibers come from sheep, they resist change for a very long time.
However, wool tapestries are expensive. Ones that mix wool with nylon are more plentiful and less expensive. They're not as durable, but they should last long enough for you to get a decent grant and use some of its funds on better tapestries.
Even with that savings, you can't afford to pay for custom-woven tapestries. The start-up funds that you negotiated as part of your hiring package won't go that far. Instead, you purchased plain tapestries through the crafts design program, which buys them in bulk. You'll paint dye onto them to form your patterns. While the dye spreads out a bit, it actually sharpens up the first time magical energy passes through it.
