Even though leather would last longer, the metal cards work well. You appreciate their cool feel and slick look, which is why you chose them after graduation.
You pull out a force spell. When you concentrate, your cards levitate an inch above your palm. You count to five, then let them lower. Your tiredness boils off of you like you just downed three Red Bulls.
Channeling magic has a side effect. It makes you more awake, more alert. You shouldn't use magic as a caffeine substitute, but this one time won't hurt.
"Cool magic trick," a passing student says.
"Thanks," you say.
Let's Talk to Dr. Ellison
The student assistant outside Dr. Ellison's office waves you on. "She's ready for you." You remember Darcy at that same desk and sigh.
Dr. Ellison greets you with a handshake. "Welcome aboard, Dr. ., welcome aboard." Her hair is more white than silver now, but she otherwise appears unchanged.
You remember her calm fury the night of the memory pattern and stifle an urge to apologize. That night was nearly eight years ago for her. She's long past that anger.
"I'm looking forward to the semester," you say. "Thank you for hiring me."
"Oh, the search committee did that. But I was well pleased with their decision." She gestures you toward the door. "Let me get coffee and then we'll sit and talk in the small conference room."
