Darcy is undoubtedly in the student center, celebrating her victory with a cup of iced coffee. You march down the quad, dodging students lounging on the grass and throwing Frisbees back and forth.
She's snagged one of the small round tables across from the Coffee Hut. As soon as she sees you, she says, "Let me explain."
"Let me explain!" Darcy says again.
"Why? So you can lie to me? Like you've been doing all these years about us meaning something to each other?"
Darcy's face reddens. "That's not fair."
"'Not fair' is being trapped in your room by your best friend!" Your voice rises. "'Not fair' is losing a fellowship because someone isn't willing to let the best practitioner win!"
"You think this is about fairness?" Darcy's voice is as bitter as her coffee. "I've spent four years busting my hump to prove myself, but no one takes me seriously because I didn't come from the right family like you did."
"You think that's why I'm here?" you say. "Nepotism?"
Darcy hunches her shoulders. "It's why Dr. Ellison likes you but doesn't like me."
"Dr. Ellison doesn't like you because you're horrible to people," you hiss. "You throw them away as soon as they're of no use to you."
"I stayed friends with Manish, didn't I?"
You didn't know you could get angrier. You suspected she saw Manish as useless, but it's one thing to suspect and another to know. "You keep his name out of your mouth."
Darcy bares her teeth at you. "Oh, like you're so different from me."
