You stare at the preparatory pattern. You have the uncomfortable feeling of your brain stretching like clay in a potter's hands. Then you look at your fire-creating pattern and channel it. Then you do it again. And again.
Every instinct is screaming at you to stop. You've spent years training to forget patterns as quickly as possible, and now you're working to remember one. You press on, though.
Again. Again. Again. You channel until, with a start, you realize you haven't looked at the pattern for minutes. You hold out your hand and, with the barest thought, create a ball of flame above your palm. You close your hand and it winks out.
"You're done, I see." Mr. Goodwin crept up behind you while you were engrossed in learning your pattern. "It looks like you learned your pattern remarkably well."
