Before you can move, the world stutters again, nearly sending you tumbling to the ground. When the vision clears, you give up and sink onto a bench on one side of the quad. Maybe you'll look like you're daydreaming.
Then the hallway returns. You and Manish stand next to a desk outside the department chair's office. Darcy drums her heels behind the desk.
That's right, her work study job was with old Dr. Leathertree. The department chair spent most of his time working on inscrutable papers about long-discarded systems of organizing patterns that no one would read. That left Darcy cooling her heels in the admin room outside the chair's office. She had little to do but update the chair's calendar on the desk's boxy beige computer, which Dr. Leathertree always ignored, and waste time on the Internet. Darcy was supremely bored most of the time.
That's why she decided that the three of you would get into Professor Cohen's office.
