Yasmine closes the practice nook's door. The nook's sound level drops, deadened by the thick tapestries that line the walls. Your synesthesia adds colors to those tapestries, thanks to the protective magical patterns worked into them.
Isaac readies himself. Yasmine adjusts the mind flower's position, then steps back. Desmond joins her. "You sure you don't want me to try first?" he asks.
"Very," Yasmine says. She checks to make sure the three of you are out of the way. "We're ready, Isaac."
Isaac nods sharply. He squares up to the flower, then focuses on it. He lifts a square of pattern paper. Magical energy pours toward the flower. A faint whine fills your ears from the energy reflected from the flower. It must be ten times worse for Isaac.
The petals shiver and begin to open. Isaac is succeeding.
"I got this," Desmond says. He lifts his own piece of pattern paper.
The whine in your ears becomes a roar. Ghostly faces pop into existence around the room. Desmond is channeling illusion magic, and he's pouring so much energy at the mind flower that it's reflecting back and affecting all of you.
"Desmond, you little shit," Yasmine says. "That's enough."
But Desmond can't stop. The ghostly faces become more solid and fill the nook. Their features stretch and deform. You can't see for the face in front of you, leering. Your ears hurt from the energy.
The pattern was too complex. Desmond is in pattern lock, unable to stop the flow of magical energy.
Uh-Oh
