Renault glances at you with interest. "You really do your research, don't you?" He hesitates, then asks, "So…what does it say? You know, about what happens to you?"
"I've never really looked into details," you admit. "I mean, I've mostly just focused on the fact that it's a lot better than the world we live in, and a hell of a lot better than the alternative."
The ghost pauses, one insubstantial foot raised off the ground, clearly turning this thought over in his insubstantial head. "Maybe that's enough," he agrees. "Right now, I'd take it."
You nod. It certainly doesn't sound too bad.
The torches flare for a moment, sending a flash of scarlet through the cavern. You stop immediately, looking round to see if it's a herald of something. Your conversation with Renault had, for perhaps a second, managed to make you forget where, exactly, you were.
"Come on," you say, looking back at Renault…who is not there.
You actually turn around in a complete circle, staring up at the ceiling and down at the floor, trying in vain to spot your translucent companion.
Renault is gone. You're all alone.
In hell.
Fear sinks its claws into you, ice-cold and needle-sharp. For a moment, you're frozen to the spot, unable to so much as lift a foot off the ground. You have no notion of where Renault might have gone or even whether it was of his own volition. All you do know is that you're alone, and you need to decide what to do next.
