They are not human or vampire footsteps, or even the sound of a werewolf's paws on the damp rock. This is a slimy slapping sound, and it's only the regular intervals between them that causes you to realize that they're footsteps at all.
Your group draws back, instinctively moving closer to one another. The footsteps, or whatever kind of steps they are, are coming nearer, though it's too dark to see the creature that's causing them.
"We should hide," Sonia whispers. "We're meant to be getting out there, not risking our necks here."
"And have it maybe following after us?" Max hisses back. "No, we can't take the chance. We take it down, and we take it down hard."
Will moves a little closer. "You can't just attack it," he murmurs. "It's not done anything to us yet: we don't know what it wants."
"And we don't have time to figure it out," Michelle says. "I say we use magic, get past it as quick as possible."
It is, you have to admit, a tricky situation. If you come off worse in a fight against whatever's stalking around, it might well prevent you from besting Renzfal. Meanwhile, while successfully acting on advice from either your fellow students or Will can only strengthen your relationships with them, any failure isn't going to do much for team spirit.
