Chapter 346 - 53

Max grins. "Sounds like a good way of doing it," he says. "Let's sack this off and go get a drink. The world can find someone else to do its dirty work for it."

"No," says Will. "We've got a responsibility." He glances at the Cavalcade Academy students before correcting himself: "Well, Romilly and I have a responsibility; I think the rest of you just have a moral imperative."

"No idea what that is," Sonia puts in.

"Me neither," Grace says, turning to address the vampire. "But Will does mention it quite a bit. I always assumed it was important."

"Well," Matron says, "it seems like the best thing to do is for us to begin the tests. There's a lot to be learned from such a thing, and we can make our plans from there."

They turn to look at Grace. "Now, young lady," they say. "If you would care to get up on the slab, we can begin the tests."

"Ah," Grace says, and some of the breezy confidence that she'd recovered since her near-death experience wanes somewhat. "Right, yeah, obviously. The tests." She looks at Matron, then turns to you. "And they involve…what, exactly?"

"Well, we will firstly need some blood," Matron says. "That's the primary test." They shoot Sonia and Val a suppressive look. "And the blood is to be used for research purposes only, as I'm sure we all know by now."

"Blood," Grace says, nodding a little too quickly. "Of course. That's standard."

"And then we take the skin," Matron goes on, clearly oblivious to any discomfort. "Small samples, obviously. With that, we can check for any impurities picked up from any gateways between realities."

Grace's eyes have gone wide. "Right," she murmurs, "skin."

"And then, if necessary, we move on to the eyes—"

Grace takes a considerable step back. It's not quite as large a step as it might have been, as Michelle is directly behind her, and it's hard to continue a step when your path tries to take you through an extremely solid zombie.

Michelle, reaching out to steady Grace, shoots you a concerned glance, and you step forward. Grace might have agreed to this, but that was back before she'd heard the fine details. Someone needs to smooth this over before she tries to make a run for it.
