This doesn't appear to have Will completely reassured if the downturn of his mouth is anything to go by. He looks, for a moment, as though he's on the verge of saying something else, then he nods.
"You're right," he says. "This is serious. We need to…" He sighs. "We need to make some tough choices. Just…" He shrugs quietly. "Don't ask me to like it."
Your group, slightly awkwardly, moves farther into the forest. Everyone's spread out among the open space, no one apparently keen on walking too close to each other. This gives you a range of choice about whom to walk with and, more importantly, whom you talk to.
The vampire nods to you almost amiably as you approach. "Kan," she says. "How's the grand expedition going? Everything that you hoped for?"
"Well, I'd not planned on an encounter with a demon headmaster," you admit. "Other than that: haunted forest, hunting a girl, enchanted thorns…pretty much by the numbers."
After a few moments, Sonia says, "I'm having trouble finding the girl."
You look at her, and she shrugs defensively. "When the furball couldn't smell her, I tried to get a read on her. But there's nothing."
"She's not really here?"
"No," Sonia says slowly. "More like there's something blocking her out, stopping me from seeing her. But whatever's happening, I don't think she's being controlled like the headmaster was." She looks at you, red eyes watching your face carefully. "She might not want to tell us anything."
