Lady Rastan arches an eyebrow. Sincere or not, it's clear that she doesn't believe you, for reasons best known entirely to Lady Rastan. Your role, more or less, is to just stand here and take it.
"And let me ask you," Lady Rastan says, "why might you be moving so slowly around here, when the vampires and werewolves you are meant to be working with are outside?" She takes a step towards you. "Perhaps you feel that your talents could be used in other areas?"
You shake your head vigorously. "No," you say, managing not to stutter. "I'll go. I'll get out there right now."
Lady Rastan nods, striding past you. "See that you do, boy, before I decide that you're not moving fast enough."
Following your encounter with the vice principal, you head out into the sunshine. The rest of the students are dotted around the school field in little groups, or else by themselves, as the sun beats down on the grass. It's impossible to not notice the gap that lies between the vampires and werewolves. It seems likely that any intrusion across the divide by either group will be the first step in a full-on fight.
No one pays much attention to your arrival. Michelle is lying down on the ground, staring directly at the sun. Sonia is sitting cross-legged on the ground, having procured a pair of dark sunglasses from somewhere. Max is doing push-ups with one gigantic arm. Renault is floating a few inches off the ground.
The social opportunities of standing by yourself seem to be fairly limited. Who do you talk to?
