Chapter 1 - Say You Will

She didn't turn around. She always turned around. Demi always came back to him, no matter what. No matter how many times she cursed him out in an endless tirade of Italian words till they were echoes emphasizing her exit, no matter who was walking away or who was watching the other leave, they would end the day in each other's arms. The city had borne witness to their tumultuous love; It's birth, it's countless resurrections and it's final d…

No, Timothy insisted to himself, their relationship wasn't dead. It was just taking longer than usual but Demi would soon swiftly spin her head and run back to him, like always. If he was being honest with himself, he had no recollection of what caused this particular argument. There was always something, but the core reason had always been the same, digging a deeper hole in both their hearts with every split and reconciliation. Still, Timothy had resigned himself to the idea that this was something they would have to go through, and the constant breakups and reconciliations were just "simple tests that true love could overcome". So, why was she still walking away?

A million suggestions sped through Timothy's mind. Should he run to her? Of course not, he was the one watching her leave. It had always been the one walking away that returned. That had become a sort of an unspoken rule of their countless breakup sessions. Also, his pride that Demi often voiced her disdain for had rendered him immobile.

Quickly, Timothy, think.

Her footsteps were inaudible, but they perfectly coincided with his heartbeat which seemed to be beating louder the further she went. But not for long. Soon, his heart rate was faster than her footsteps, increasingly so. He tried to think of what to do but the words 'Quickly Timothy, think' were the only options his panic-dosed mind could devise at that very moment. It seemed every part of his body was searching for answers, but they appeared to be nowhere.

Suddenly, everything stopped. The world stopped, his thoughts stopped… because she stopped. She stopped moving, her figure casting a still shadow on the sun stained street and a violent shadow over his whole world. For a few seconds, they both remained motionless, like a single freeze frame. Timothy tried to do something, anything to make her stay or at the very least, turn around to look at him. But he couldn't.

Demi lowered her head a little then took a step further away. Timothy could tell she was fighting a tear; he knew her too well by now. She took one more step further, two, three, till her feet continued walking away, kicking the rest of the world into motion.

And the cruel world didn't seem to care that Timothy's heart had shattered into a million pieces, plunging him into an unfamiliar depth of despair. Yet, in the midst of Timothy's despair lay a tinge of admiration. Admiration for Demi and the strength she possessed to really see this through to the end. This was the furthest she had ever walked away, it was gradually becoming clear she wasn't going to stop. And once she was gone, they both had no idea what would come next. She was venturing into new territory the further she left. A territory without Timothy.
