Chapter 378 - The Library: Rune

"Hello ladies and gentlemen and everyone in-between or apart," That's a mouthful intro (';') "Well, had to cover everyone and fill in some word count. Today's going to be a short chapter, after all." That it is, and for anyone wondering why... well, it's because if you read the title, we're only covering one type of magic today. "And we're doing that so the following chapters can be better written." Yeah, what he said.

"Anyway." The Librarian clasped his hands together as we found ourselves, once again, back in the usual field. "Let's get on with the topic at hand." ...Well, are you going to do anything? \(°ロ\)

"Here's the thing. With the way Rune magic works, I don't really want to demonstrate it." What do you mean? "Well, Rune magic uses, as one would expect, Runes. And these Runes are made using perfectly smooth stones."

The Librarian snapped his fingers, and in his hand appeared a perfectly smooth stone, slightly larger than a checker piece, along with a sharp stone-carving knife. "I'll make one right now," he said as he began working on the stone.

"You're probably wondering what I'm carving into this, right? Well, it's a Rune—like the ones from real-life mythologies. The one I'm carving right now is a Norse Rune called Uruz. It's a Rune that increases strength," he explained while holding up the stone. It now bore the symbol of Uruz. If you want to know what it looks like, just look it up. It's kind of like a lowercase 'n.'

Now what do you do with the Rune? "You carve some of your flesh out and stick it inside."

...Excuse me (?_?)

"Which is why I'm not going to do it. Believe it or not, I care quite a bit about my physical appearance. So, that's why we're going to be using a test dummy today!"

Wait, what? Are we really going to- "Just do it!"

Fine!

"What the fuck!?" A very confused man in his forties appeared, his short blue hair streaked with white. He wore something akin to a toga, though it was clearly modified for long-term travel, though it didn't look like it had seen much comfort recently. His left eye gleamed a deep bronze, while the right was milky white, as if blinded. "Where am I!?" he shouted, his voice sharp as his gaze darted around. When his eyes locked onto The Librarian, his confusion turned to anger. "Who are you!?" he demanded, jabbing a finger in The Librarian's direction. "Did you bring me to this... place!?"

The Librarian let out an exasperated sigh. "Of all people, you bring him?"

What did you want me to do? (._.) You asked so suddenly, so I brought this guy.

"Who are you talking to?" the man asked, his voice tinged with suspicion.

"No one, Xerxes. Now come here for a moment." Despite the calm tone, The Librarian was the one to step forward, grabbing Xerxes by the arm before he could react.

"Hey, wait, what are you—" Xerxes's protest was cut off as The Librarian stabbed him.

"Agh! What the hell!?" Xerxes roared, his body jerking as he tried to free himself. It was futile, though—he might as well have been trying to move a mountain for all the progress he made.

"Calm down," The Librarian said calmly. Without waiting for a response, he pressed the freshly carved Rune into the wound on Xerxes's arm.

"Ugh! Why are you doing this to me!?" Xerxes cried out, his voice equal parts anger and pain.

The Librarian ignored the question entirely. "Okay," The Librarian said casually, "now try to pull your arm out of my grasp."

Xerxes, more than eager to escape, yanked his arm—and this time, it came free with surprising ease. What had once felt immovable now felt light as a feather. Xerxes stumbled back, clutching his arm and staring at The Librarian with a mixture of anger and disbelief.

"The power of Rune magic, folks! Though, to clarify, most runes aren't usually that strong. It's just that I'm a very proficient maker of Runes, so this one could enhance him enough to outmatch me."

"Again, who the hell are you talking to?! And what is wrong with you!? Who just shoves a rune into someone!?" Xerxes shouted, his anger boiling over. Honestly, he had every right to be mad. We did do him dirty. Anyway, before the situation could escalate further, Xerxes abruptly disappeared.

"Well, that was anticlimactic," What do you want me to do?

"Not narrate a dead Godslayer into existence?"

Whatever. That's all for today! BYE!
