Chapter 289 - Arc 5, Chapter 1

**In an unknown location somewhere in Aetheria**

The sage let out a sigh, massaging his temples. "That was a tiring night," he muttered, sitting on his throne in a simple tunic and pants. His usual robes were being washed due to the demon blood splattered on them.

"That has to suck, doesn't it?" remarked the vampire smugly, lounging on their throne in their usual noble attire. The sage shot them an annoyed look.

"I mean, I got to have a nice meal while you have to do laundry," the vampire continued, their fangs glinting as they grinned. "You know, I would have happily licked it off you, right?"

"I don't want your tongue anywhere near me, you leech," he spat.

The vampire's grin only widened. "Then why didn't you let me?" interjected the succubus, seated on her throne in her usual black dress, her eyes gleaming with mischief. Each of the beings' retainers stood by as always.

"I want you near me even less!" the sage snapped. The succubus chuckled.

"Why not? It's in my nature to be of physical service," she said with a shrug, her voice dripping with seductive undertones.

"That's why I don't want you near me!" The sage retorted, exasperated. He then added, "And how did both of you get your clothes cleaned so quickly?" He looked pointedly at the succubus and the vampire, who exchanged glances before turning back to him.

"Magic?" they said simultaneously.

The sage sank back into his throne. "You two rely on magic too much," he muttered, resting his head on his palm. Both the succubus and the vampire narrowed their eyes at this statement.

"Your abilities rely entirely on magic," the succubus pointed out, her tone smooth and cutting.

"Yeah, that's why you're called 'the sage'," the vampire added, their voice laced with sarcasm.

"That's beside the point!" the sage exclaimed, his frustration evident. His retainer muttered, "But it is a very good point."

The sage turned and booted his retainer in the ass, knocking him to the ground. "Whose side are you on, ya daft prick?" he shouted, his patience wearing thin.

The retainer scrambled to his feet, rubbing his sore rear. "Yours, sir," he replied while the succubus and the vampire exchanged amused glances.

"Clearly, he's just being honest," the vampire remarked with a smirk.

"Honesty can be a dangerous thing around here," the succubus added with a sly smile.

The sage sighed again, feeling a headache coming on. "I swear, between the demons and you two, I'm going to lose my mind," he muttered, sinking deeper into his throne.

"Speaking of which," the sage's retainer said as all of the beings turned to him, "Could we ask about that?" He fixed his ashy hair and looked up at the sage. "Ask about what?" the sage inquired, raising an eyebrow.

The succubus's retainer spoke up, her dog ears flicking as she motioned to the other retainers. "Well, all of us were wondering if you would tell us about the small demon invasion that happened last night."

"Yes, none of us know exactly why that happened," added the vampire's retainer, his yellow eyes scanning the beings.

"Fucked if we know!" said the sage, throwing his hands into the air. All three retainers simultaneously went, "Huh?"

The vampire spoke up. "Yeah, we don't know either. The demons kind of just appeared," they said with a shrug.

The succubus's retainer turned to her and asked, "You have to know something about it, right, Mistress?"

The succubus let out a few nervous chuckles. "To tell you the truth, I'm the one who's most confused by this situation. This is not how invasions usually play out," she said.

The sage's retainer turned to him and asked, "But what about the portal? Don't demons have to come in through portals?"

The vampire raised their hand, stating, "We found where it was and we shut it down."

The sage turned to them, exclaiming, "I shut it down! You two did jack fucking shit and just watched!"

The vampire shrugged, stuck their tongue out, and winked. "We all contributed equally," they said cheekily.

The sage groaned, rubbing his temples again. "This is why I can't stand you two," he muttered.

The succubus laughed lightly. "Oh, you love us, really. Who else would keep you on your toes?"

"Anyone who doesn't give me a migraine," he retorted, leaning back in his throne.

All the retainers exchanged looks before one of them spoke up. "Can we be dismissed?"

The beings paused momentarily and exchanged glances themselves before replying simultaneously.

"Fine, whatever, fuck off," said the sage.

"Sure, you deserve a break," the succubus added.

"Why not? Have fun," the vampire chimed in.

The retainers bowed before exiting the throne room. As the door closed behind them, the sage's retainer turned to the others. "What the hell was that?" he asked, pointing at the door they had just walked through.

"I don't know, they seem so... peaceful today," replied the succubus's retainer.

"Maybe because they got out a lot of energy killing those demons last night?" added the vampire's retainer.

"Well, whatever it is, it made them give us a break. When was the last time they did that?" the sage's retainer asked.

The vampire's retainer thought for a moment, then shook his head. "Don't remember."

The sage's retainer looked between the other two. "So, uh, either of you have plans?"

The two opened their mouths to say something before closing them and shaking their heads.

"Want to hang out then?" the sage's retainer asked.

"Eh, why not?" replied the vampire's retainer, shrugging.

"Yes, please!" the succubus's retainer nodded excitedly, her tail wagging.

"Alright then, let's go!" said the sage's retainer with a smile.

As they walked away together, the sage's retainer thought to himself, *Maybe a break is just what we all need.*
