Chapter 13 - Circles

After breakfast, the three finally got down to business.

"So, what exactly is the problem right now? I've heard the basics from Azure so you can skip that part." Ryuda wiped his mouth with a napkin and asked.

The french toast with butter he had was delicious.

"Well, if Azure Monarch already told you the gist of it, there's nothing much I can tell you anymore."

"Huh? What do you mean?"

"I mean that the Black Dragons of Avalon want to summon my teacher's inner demon to deal with me."

"Okay, could you tell me about Merlin's inner demon? We have to collect information before we can make preparations, Arthur." Ryuda sank his face into his palms and sighed.

Ryuda wanted to slap King Arthur at this point.

They've been going back and forth for a good hour now and Ryuda hasn't been able to collect any good information regarding Avalon's problem!

"Arthur, if you don't give me useful information about Merlin's inner demon right now, I will erase Camelot off the Avalonian Continent. Do you understand?"

King Arthur stopped going around the subject upon hearing Ryuda's tone. As an experienced king, he knew how to read people.

So when he read Ryuda's face, he could tell that he was going to die the moment he tried to set up another loop around the subject.

Scared out of his wits, King Arthur finally said something useful.

"My teacher's inner demon's name is called Ambrosius. As his full name was Merlinus Ambrosius, my teacher wanted to transcend his lightning tribulations with the least difficulty possible."

"So the inner demon was born by separating it from his soul. We understand." Ryuda nodded.

He then looked at Azure Monarch and sent him a telepathic message.

'Now that we know the demon's true name, go and find the Black Dragons of Avalon. I'll personally deal with Merlin's inner demon.'

Azure Monarch nodded before he disappeared from the hall.

King Arthur saw this and couldn't help but become shocked. 'Huh? I barely gave them anything useful, and the Azure Monarch is gone just like that? Holy shit, I think I just shot myself in the foot…'

To outsiders, the Black Dragons of Avalon were terrorizing the Avalonian Continent to get sacrifices to summon Merlin's inner demon from god knows where.

But to King Arthur who was a part of the nobles of the Avalonian Empire, he knew more about the story.

Yes, the Black Dragons of Avalon planned to revive Merlin's inner demon.

Yes, the Black Dragons of Avalon have killed and pillaged tens of thousands of villages to search for sacrifices.

And yes, the Black Dragons of Avalon were on bad terms with King Arthur.

But what Ryuda and Azure Monarch didn't know about the Black Dragons of Avalon was that the group of men called the Black Dragons were a team of SSS ranked Necromancers handpicked by the Avalonian Empire.

And the reason why the Black Dragons of Avalon wanted to summon Merlin's inner demon was also due to the Avalonian Empire's influence.

100 years ago, there was an X ranked Sage called Merlin. He was the strongest magic user of the Avalonian Continent.

The Avalonian Empire tried to recruit him, but Merlin declined their offer.

He simply wanted to travel the continent to improve his understanding of nature and live freely.

The Avalonian Empire did not take this well.

After all, Merlin was an uncontrolled X ranker.

The Avalonian Empire wouldn't be able to expand peacefully knowing that Merlin was walking through a random village on the continent.

But since the other party was an X ranker, the Avalonian Empire couldn't do anything to Merlin, lest they offend him.

So they did the next best thing an empire could do.

The Avalonian Empire held a competition where the participants had to pull out a sword from a stone.

The sword was a normal weapon the butler of the Avalonian Empire's royal family bought at a random smithy somewhere, while the stone was a random stone they found at the bottom of a mountain.

Hoping that Merlin would show up to participate, the Avalonian Empire fabricated a story of the sword in stone with countless flattery.

The competition then went on for 50 years without seeing any progress.

Merlin didn't show up, while the participants of the sword pulling competition were all common men and children who had come to try their luck.

The participants didn't know that the sword was struck into the stone by an S ranked Knight.

So one needed to have the same amount of strength before they could pull the sword out.

As time went on, the Avalonian Empire became anxious.

They were worried that Merlin had figured out their ploy and decided to not show up for all of eternity.

That was until a 12 year old child with messy blonde hair showed up.

That child was Arthur.

The sword pulling competition has been going on for 60 years now.

No one had been able to figure out the method of pulling the sword out from the stone.

Arthur looked like every other participant who came to try his luck.

So the overseer of the competition only gave Arthur a glance before he turned away to talk with his fellow knights.

As for himself, Arthur spat saliva on his hands before he rubbed them together. He then placed his hands on the hilt of the sword before he lifted it up with ease.

The overseer was still chatting with his knight friends, so only the people behind Arthur saw what he had done.

"Incredible! The child is the chosen one!"

"The blonde-haired child has pulled the sword out!"

"I must be dreaming! This can't be real!"

Countless gasps and sighs rang out as Arthur lifted the sword above his head.

It was only then did the overseer see Arthur.

"Impossible…How…What…No…No…No…" The overseer tried to form words but the shock he felt overwhelmed him.

It was only then did the Avalonian Empire learn of Arthur's existence.
