Chapter 1 - Prologue

Standing on the balcony, I felt the wind swirl around me. My dark blue cloak, lined with golden stripes, billowed in the breeze. It was nighttime, and I was approximately 500 feet up in my castle, Diamondhead Chateau. Even now, I couldn't help but feel a sense of melancholy as I looked down into the kingdom below me.

My name is Aurelius, known better as the Divine Light. Both my biological father & mother were unknown, as those records weren't kept yet in the year that I was born, in addition to my abandonment at age 5. I was brought up by the fabled sorcerer Merlin, who is said to be descended from the gods themselves, and exposed to magic at a young age.

In the kingdom of Aurora, my name is well known. And yet, I am a distant figure in the everyday life of the common civilian. I am known as a guardian deity, a messenger from the heavens sent down to save the world. My abilities are beyond comprehension from the average man. I have conquered the mortal death 2,000 years ago.

And yet, I was unaware of the impending event that would ultimately spell my demise.

Hearing footsteps in the room leading to my balcony, I turned. For an unknown reason, my heart rate sped up. My palms began to sweat. I only had this feeling once before; when I was facing the judgement of the gods 1,000 years ago, when they declared my use in this world: to protect the Earth and act as I mentioned before, a guardian deity.

There were what appeared to be two children sitting in thrones in the room. Stepping into the room and taking a defensive stance, I shouted, "Who are you?"

What followed next was impossible to describe. As I had heard once before, their lips did not move, but their voices were loud and clear. Graphical yet monotone. Demanding yet patient. Comforting, yet chilly.

"The seal on the Darkmourn Temple hath been broken, thy power unleashed."

I paled. That couldn't be possible. 1,000 years ago, I used the Time-Lock spell on the Darkmourn Temple, sealing the Stealthgale Serpent for the rest of time. This aerial serpent, boasting a length of 500 meters and a width of 20 meters, had wiped out cities for years on end until I finally sealed it. That feat was what had gotten me an audience with the gods. It was also what killed Merlin, my mentor & adopted father.

"Does that mean..." I whispered.

Confirming my worst suspicions, they intoned, "Thee hath failed in thy duty, for the Stealthgale Serpent hath been unleashed."

Failed in my duty? What did they mean?

"Y-You still haven't told me who you are," I shouted. "Who are you, to go around making such statements?"

"We, the messengers of the gods, have descended hither to bestow upon thee thy divine punishment."

I backed up. I knew I had no chance in combat against even just one of them, let alone two. My only option was to make a run for it. Before I had time to process this however, I felt a searing light in my chest. I looked up. One of the children had stood up, a magic circle inscribed in his palm and pointed towards me.

"Vita. Tolles. Furantur," he recited. The magic circle grew in size exponentially. I doubled over in pain. As I collapsed to the floor, I heard one last sentence.

"You have failed."

Then, I lost consciousness and just like that, died.
