Derrick's POV
I was already done with making the arrangements for tomorrow's trip.
Checking the time on the wall clock, it read 5:40
Shit.
I still had some personal arrangements to make so i quickly packed up my remaining stuff on the desk.
They weren't much considering i just resumed today and will be traveling tomorrow.
I headed towards the school park l, it was empty, i greeted towards the security guards i met on the way, some asked me who i was, requesting for my ID.
Fair enough, many of them were just seeing me as i was a new teacher.
After i got thoroughly scrutinized, i was allowed to go, i got into my blue sports car.
Dropping my bag on the passenger seat, i started to smile as i was reversing, tomorrow is going to be a long day.
I arrived at my place, i parked at my driveway seeing that my neighbor was around today.
Thought I'd pay obligience to them, it was a very simple and reserved neighborhood.
The houses in total were just 8, two on each side with a big garden demacating the first two buildings, then at the end of the street was a close.
I liked the area so much, i bought the house, i rounded my car towards my left towards House B2, but i didn't expect what i saw.
I saw a young boy, I'd say he was a minor with the way he was being pinned down but i couldn't put a face on who it is.
I doubted I'd know the neighbor
There were lots of makes guys around, there were a total of six, i started to sidestep, didn't want to get involved in another person's mess.
I had already started, walking back towards my apartment when i heard a car door opening and little whimpers.
"Is a kid involved...?" I am not going to check.
I have been enough in much shit than i do like to get myself in another just in the name of helping someone.
But something halted my step, what she said or shouted.
"Bliss!!!!"
Dan Bliss?
I turned around to crosscheck i heard the name well until i saw his face clearly shocked to her.
It was getting darker for people to see what's was going on around here with clothes the assassins were wearing.
"Get. Back. Into. The. Car." I heard his strangled shout.
He was begging the girl to be safe, to not let them get ahold on her,
that he was safe
but she was too innocent,
too young to understand.
"Please Hailey..." He continued finally drawing attention of the assassins that a baby was there.
The guy in front signalled with a tip of his head towards the girl.
Bliss didn't see the movement, but he saw one heading towards the girl, he face struck in despair fearing for the girl's life.
Who was she to him?
He is a single child, isn't he?
She was brought to him, he surrendered immediately.
"Pick him up and knock the girl out in the car" the leader gave orders.
She started to thrash around, crying more "Hailey...Hailey...Babygirl calm down. I'll be back before the day ends uh to celebrate your birthday finish."
He said, he was too distracted, i wanted him to see me.
I was ready to help him, but we needed to work together.
He kept on blabbering, i blocked out his remaining words focusing on the formation of the assassins.
There was a hole in their formation, there a lone guy outside the formation, he created a space just enough for him to be...
In her baby tiny voice, she gibber out in between hiccups "I. Love. You. Too. Blu" i last heard before i saw him hugging her.
I was hiding behind the the black mustang car hopefully he'd see me now.
He was released for a while, then he sighted me.
The shock plastered on his face before he recovered and saw the signal i was giving him.
I counted till three and ducked a stone towards the lone assassins.
He turned a little to see where it was coming from, then he left them, heading towards my side.
My plan,
It was working,
I started taking small steps backwards, while he was coming forward.
I stopped for a bit, knowing he was very close, as he was taking a turn around the car.
I strangled his neck with in between my forearm and lower arm very fast.
He made a startled sound alerting the others before i knocked him out.
The others hearing the distraction left Bliss and started to move in on me, leaving just two behind and sending the other two to me.
What i expected.
Such fools.
I made sure they were a far but from Dan before making my next attack.
With a stick i found near the lawn, i used it to strike at the first guy near me, he fell clutching his eyes.
I looked towards him, signing two down four more to go.
With the immediate distraction, i stab the other in his left abdomen causing a rupture in his stomach.
He toppled over immediately, giving me space to elbow his neck, before he fell.
I came out to the opening, revealing myself.
"Who are you? And what's your business here" i heard the assumed leader say in a very deep baritone voice.
Trying to dominate uh..
You got one thing coming.
"I am a bloody civilian, who ends up getting in others mess whether i like it or not" i said sarcastically.
It was a sad truth anyway,
The guy just laughed, "I like you, despite the harm you've done to my guys" he made by indicating with his hands to the men on the ground.
"I don't want to hurt you, and neither do I want involve you cause you don't know what you are up against"
"Don't worry your ass about it, I've gotten into deep more shit than some assassins dragging a boy towards 'who the fuck knows where's? So I'm ok, I'm already involved."
Bliss was still numbed about the whole incident, he was holding her tight.
I called his name "Bliss..." He jumped a little startled about hearing his name.
He looked at me, i just smirked, his blue orbs shining in the dark "Come over here..." Motioning with my hands.
He blinked first looking between me and the assassins, no attempt was made to stop or encourage him.
He stumbled on his first attempt, gathering himself he had a lopsided gait, while carrying her.
He finally reached us, strained and tired, he never should be going through something like this.
Where are his parents?
The thought just came, they must be late workers to be able to miss the whole drama even the mess they created.
As he came over, the assassins left swiftly carrying their injured men, without a word.
It was like they were never here, it was their operation, "Externale fashi out"
Bliss looked around wondering if it's was a dream but the injuries on his body told him otherwise.
"Who are you?" Was the first question to spill out of his mouth.
"Is that anyway to thank your savior" i smirked.
"Pssh... I was handling them just fine" he replied narcissistly.
"Well... Hold your narcissistic horses young man, if i hadn't helped you out there, you'd have become a potato, whatever it is they got on you"
He just grumbled away, wanting to enter his car.
I held him by his hand, "listen young man, if you think I'm gonna allow a child under my wing just waltz around injured with a kid, you've got one thing coming then"
He tried to escape my grip, he was too weak to do so, he gave up and came into my apartment.
"How coincidentally, you're the neighbor..."
He became mute
Oh, i could deal with that
"Where are your parents?" I asked changing the topic as they were getting in.
"Gone" was the the only word to leave his mouth. The girl still clinging tightly to her.
Guiding them through the foyers, entering into the sitting room, my move in boxes were still scattered everywhere.
There wasn't much yet i had set up, but there was a cushion, a comforter and a glass table in between all giving an 'O' shape.
I had hung my pictures,with my granddad up on the wall which Bliss was staring intently on.
I bent down to her, Bliss becoming more attentive and stiffening his hold on her.
"Hey, babygirl... What's your name?"
She didn't answer too.
Okay, let's try that another way then.
"I'm Derrick, what's yours?" She got out a little out of Bliss comfort and said shyly.
"I'm Dan Hailey"
Okay,
Wait... What?
"She's your sister?" It was my turn to be shocked and his to smirk.
Un-fucking-believable
I had a lot of questions
Why did he hide it?
Why would his parents allow it?
Do they know his hiding her?
"Why?" That was the only question I could come up with that summed everything up.
He just shrugged his shoulder.
I got up and went to the kitchen, it was a big spacious kitchen with a middle tabletop and cabinet beneath.
Going towards the top cabinet, surprisingly made of glass, i slide it open to bring out a honey tea bag and two mugs.
I picked it up, putting the tea bags into the pot while waiting for the water to boil.
I rested on the counter, this is really one situation i need to tread carefully.
The water ping signifying that it was done.
"Alright, guys here is a cup of hot tea, it's honey tea, to calm you down" they both collected it from me.
While i took sprite from the fridge, opening the can, i loved the smmmmch sound.
Downing it all in one go, i headed back to them after disposing the empty can.
"So when will they be back?" I still had some stuff to do than dealing with this now.
I had to tell Samuel.
One big hurdle to cross, "Who?" Bliss asked confused.
"Those men outside, i don't know i doubt anytime soon" i was confused now. Didn't he get my question?
"I meant your parents" Bliss looked up at me.
Staying silent, his eyes were frantic, i think he was deciding to tell me about it or not.
"Dead" he finally spoke.
Okay, i didn't expect that.
"Your guardian? Anyone older staying with you?"
He nodded his head "Why would they allow a minor handle another minor?"
He laughed this time at my confused state "I thought you meant that literally, but I'm not a minor" he said confidently with a wink to prove his point.
"Whatever, then i guess you guys are staying overnight, right?" He was about to object it but with a stern look i said "I'm not allowing you into the den's hole knowing you guys can be attacked at any time"
I continued "Do i be the adult and ask you what happened out there or be the bad guy and force it out of you"
"What mess did you get yourself into, that could have taken yours and Hailey's life uh."
"Still not going to say anything. Fine!" I finally gave in and spoke softly.
"If you don't wanna talk now, I'll respect you but do it at your will, just know I'll be expecting an explanation from you."
He still didn't say anything, i sighed.
"And how do you know they were going to let me go?" Was his reply skeptically.
"I've had my own share of rebel, I'm not going to start a whole tale on the bad boy turns good story, i thinks it's late. We have a busy day tomorrow. And i still have a lot of work to do."
I looked towards Hailey, she had swollen eyes already "is there anything you'd like to eat?" I asked particularly to Hailey.
She nodded her head eagerly, "I want my cake."
Cake?
Then i remember the littered toys and balloons.
It was already too late and...
"It's in my car, I'll go and bring it, I'm sorry for ruining your special day" he told her quietly.
I left them for awhile going over to call Samuel about the mess i just got myself into.
"And how do you know that they were going to leave me" Bliss asked just before he left the door, his hold stopping the door from fully closing.
"Who? Those guys... Easy, they are trained to abort their mission once a third party is involved"
He nodded in understanding "And how do you know so much about them?"
With a tilt of my head, "Curiosity kills the cat, doesn't it, Go get the cake"
I put on a cartoon for Hailey while talking to Samuel about everything that happened also telling him to seek protection for Bliss and his sister.
That's the best i can do for them now.
I heard the door clicked open, I ended the call to get back to them.
When he arrived, we sang the happy birthday song for her, cut the cake and gave her the remaining gifts that wasn't smashed including her med set.
I planned to give her her gift tomorrow.
We talked and chatted for awhile, he was definitely wasn't the same Bliss i had encountered earlier today.
Deciding I would do my packing and finishing up tomorrow, i led them towards the guest room towards the left of the kitchen, the walls were painted cream different from the parlor, it gave a calmer, appeasing and comfortable look. I had few portrait on the walls, random arts i had picked up. The room was just opposite my room, i saw that Bliss didn't like the idea but he had no choice.
It was four bedrooms apartment, his would be too, but what would he be doing with the remaining rooms and in that big house just the two of them.
"What are you going to do about Hailey?"
He look puzzled before realization sets in
"The trip?" I continued.
"I think i may bail out, not too really into all this and i can't leave Hailey..." He paused staring at her with a tender look in his eyes.
Before completing his statement "...alone"
"Or you could bring her along" he immediately dismissed the idea.
What was he so scared of?
I bid them goodnight and left to attend to some of my matters.
