Chapter 12 - Echoes of Gratitude

I entered my car and opened the door, greeted by my assistant Emily. She offered a warm smile and asked, "Young master, good afternoon. How was your first day at Ouran Academy?"

"It was good, albeit tiring. I exerted a lot of energy trying to be active," I replied, feeling the fatigue settling in.

"Emily, I have a request," I continued. "Could you run a background check on Kenji Suzuki, our English teacher in Class 1-A? I only know that he has a family and parents. I want to know if teaching at Ouran Academy is his only experience and if Does he hold any grudges against his students?"

"Certainly, young master. I will investigate and provide you with the information you seek," Emily assured me.

As the car started and we left Ouran Academy behind, I gazed out of the car window, observing the cityscape passing by. Emily engaged me in conversation, and I turned my attention to her.

"Young master, what are your assignments currently at Ouran Academy?" she inquired.

"We have a reporting task in the technology class, but I delegated it to Catherine, Kanna, and Aina. I simply oversee and guide them," I explained.

"I understand, young master. For tomorrow, you have a busy schedule. You need to wake up early, have breakfast with your parents, attend classes at Ouran Academy, and then return home with the car service. Afterward, you have a dinner planned with your family, followed by rest," Emily informed me.

"I would like to add, young master, that later in the dinner, Mr. Asendorf, your father, expressed a desire to speak with you about your first day at school," she added.

I couldn't help but wonder about the purpose of this discussion. Would it be a casual conversation, simply checking if I had a good day? Or did my parents have concerns about my behavior or performance on the first day of class? I pushed those thoughts aside for now, deciding to dismiss them until the time came.

Suddenly, my cellphone buzzed in my pocket, indicating an incoming call from an unknown number. I handed the phone to Emily, instructing her to answer it on my behalf. She put the call on speaker, allowing me to listen to the conversation.

"Good afternoon, this is Emily, Adrian Asendorf's assistant. How may I assist you?" Emily greeted the caller.

"Oh, this is his assistant? Good afternoon, Emily. Is Adrian there with you?" I recognized the voice immediately—it was Kanna Takahashi.

"May I know your name?" Emily asked.

"My name is Kanna Takahashi." Kanna replied.

"Apologies, Kanna. I wasn't aware it was you. I looked at the Class 1-A student list earlier, and I see you're his classmate," Emily said, realizing the connection.

Emily handed me the phone, and I greeted Kanna with a teasing tone, fully aware of her blushing and embarrassment.

"Good afternoon, Kanna. It seems you missed me," I playfully remarked.

Kanna stammered, flustered by my comment. "I-I just wanted to call and ask if you're okay," she replied, her voice filled with genuine concern.

"Are you on your way home now, Kanna, with your car service?" I inquired, noticing the sound of a car engine in the background.

"Yes, I'm going home, Adrian. My assistant agreed to call you, and my driver arrived promptly when you left for Ouran Academy. I wanted to thank you again," Kanna expressed her gratitude.

"For what, Kanna?" I asked, hoping to hear her answer.

"For standing up for me and saving me from Mr. Suzuki. I just wanted to express my gratitude, Adrian. If you weren't there, I would have been.... a laughing stock and faced Mr. Suzuki's wrath," Kanna expressed sincerely.

"I couldn't stand by and watch you, Kanna. You're my friend, my classmate. I can't tolerate seeing any harm come your way or any of my friends'. If someone dares to hurt or humiliate my friends or classmates, they'll have to face me first. You're one of my treasures, and I protect what I cherish," I reassured her, my tone calm and composed.

"Thank you, Adrian. I'm glad you're my friend," Kanna replied, her voice tinged with happiness and a blush evident in her words.

"Adrian, see you tomorrow. I enjoyed calling you today," Kanna said, a hint of excitement in her voice.

"Likewise, Kanna. It was great talking to you. See you tomorrow at Ouran Academy," I replied, bidding her farewell.

As the conversation concluded, I realized that I had forgotten to turn off the speaker. Unfortunate as it was, Emily had overheard our entire conversation. Sheepishly, I admitted my mistake.

"Sorry, I forgot to turn off the speaker," I confessed.

"It's alright, Young Master. I'm glad to see you getting along well with your classmates," Emily replied, her tone understanding.

"Yes, they have been kind to me, especially Kanna, Aina, and Catherine," I acknowledged.

"Well, young master, in the future, will you choose one of the three?" Emily asked, a hint of amusement in her voice.

"I can't say for certain at this moment. In the future, I may meet more girls," I replied honestly.

"Young Master, you truly are a playboy, toying with women's hearts and emotions," Emily remarked, a hint of amusement in her voice

I refuted her claim, defending myself. "No, I'm not a playboy. Well, I must admit that I enjoy teasing and playing with their emotions. You can't blame me entirely for my looks, demeanor, and speech. People may perceive me as a playboy, but deep down, I believe there is someone who will capture my heart. I will patiently wait for that person."

"You may be right, Young Master. In the future, you will encounter more women, and someone will inevitably capture your heart," Emily agreed, her voice filled with understanding.

Returning my gaze to the front of the car, I pondered our conversation. After a while, exhaustion began to take its toll on me, and my eyes grew heavy. I fought against sleep, determined to stay awake. However, my body yearned for rest, and my eyelids drooped despite my efforts. Emily noticed my struggle and offered a solution.

"Young master, if your body is tired, there's no need to fight it. When the body is weary, it surrenders to sleep. Lay your head on my shoulder and rest," Emily suggested, her voice soothing.

I hesitated for a moment, realizing that this would be the first time I would sleep with my head on someone's shoulder. Emily was my assistant and she's just doing her job, so there was no harm in accepting her help. I expressed my gratitude and acquiesced.

"Thank you, Emily. You are a lifesaver," I said appreciatively.

As I laid my head on her shoulder, I felt the warmth of her skin against my cheek. Closing my eyes, I remarked on the situation.

"This is my first time resting my head on someone's shoulder and falling asleep in a car," I confessed.

Emily chuckled softly, her voice tinged with amusement. "Young Master, it is an honor to be the first person whose shoulder you choose to rest on. As your assistant, I consider it an achievement to provide you with assistance. Now, sleep and enjoy your rest. Your body needs it," she advised.

With her words in mind, I let my eyes drift shut, allowing sleep to claim me. The car continued its journey, and when it finally came to a stop and parked, I awoke, wondering where we were. I discovered that we had arrived at my residence, and Emily informed me of our location.

"Young Master, we have reached your home," she informed me.

"I just woke up. Thank you for letting me sleep on your shoulder, Emily," I expressed my gratitude.

"It's my pleasure to serve you, young master. Until we meet again tomorrow," Emily replied with a smile.

I nodded in acknowledgment and opened the car door, stepping out and making my way to the entrance of my mansion. As I approached, the maids greeted me respectfully, forming a line on both sides.

"Good evening, young master. Your parents are waiting for you at the dining table," they greeted me and informed me in unison.

"I'm on my way. Thank you for reminding me," I replied, returning their bows.

As I prepared myself for the challenge that lay ahead a dinner with my family, during which my father would discuss something with me and i reminded myself that this was the life of the puppet heir of the Asendorf family. I would face challenges and obstacles head-on. This dinner was just another hurdle to overcome.

With that in mind, I stepped forward, ready to confront whatever awaited me. Little did I know that this dinner would hold its own set of surprises and revelations.
