Chapter 8 - Ambitions

"But why?!" Spade asked Martha. She was serving him food. After the slap ten minutes ago, Spade told the animals off and the other people went back to their respective tents.

"You don't understand Spade. You are too young to do this right now. What's even your age, 17? That's not your time to do something this reckless. Even your parents wouldn't have wanted that."

"My parents? You always say this in order to stop me." Spade says. "They were not even present with me this whole time."

Martha stopped. She knew what happened to Spade's parents. Although they were not there and Spade grew up with her, if it was not for them, Spade would not even be here.

"Your parents...." She said. "Young man, you don't know how indebted you are to your parents right now."

"Indebted to people I have never even seen? Yeah." He said while chewing.

There was a moment of silence inside the tent. For a while, both of them decided to stay shut. Until Spade felt uncomfortable in the air and decided to break the silence.

"You... Know anything about my mom and pops?"

Martha, upon hearing this, went through a conflict inside her head. Should she tell him? Or should she still wait for the right time?

"Listen, Spade." She said.

"Don't tell me you are waiting for the right time, okay?" He interrupted.

Martha paused. What should she do? The current time is not right to tell him everything. He is still a hot blooded brat. Not mature enough to understand the past.

"I would not tell you everything right now. If you are so eager, it will be the best for both me and you to just share a little information. Do you agree?" She demanded.

"Is it really that serious?"

"You would know when the time comes. Right now, hear this." She said as she walked to Spade. "I, am your mother's little sister, and you know it, right?"

"... Yes?"

"So the thing is... You, are not normal."

"What do you mean?"

"Just hear me. You are not like all of us in the mountains. You are different from them in some way, and while we are still not sure, your parents believed that you were special." She said.

"So... I am special. Like, am I a power holder?"

"It could be. Because all of us people of the mountains don't have powers. We haven't seen that in you too. But the thing that you can talk to animals is something we haven't seen someone do before." Martha said as she went back to work. "Now don't get carried away with that."

Spade just sat there, eating his food, as the little light from the sunset entered the tent. After finishing his meal, he smiled.

He got up and went out of the tent to see the sunset.

"Hey aunty." He said.

"Hmm? What?" Martha said as she saw him get out of the tent. She followed him out.

"So, if I am really different. Let me do what I am going to do."

"I refus-"

"Just hear me out." Spade interrupted. "Since I was born, i always saw how the people of the country were allowed to roam freely. I saw how that one person above all them had the responsibility to call them their people and keep them safe." He said.

"The Apex Predator. He is respected by every one, the most honorable title a person can achieve... Throughout my life, I have seen the people around me, the so called 'Lower Class' have been humiliated by the ones from the kingdom.

So what if I say.. That I will become the Apex Predator and free ourselves from these chains of inequality? I will keep them safe. I will take the responsibility.

I don't even care about being special or anything. I just want to, you know..." He says as a huge gust of wind blows and light shines on his face, "..be free."

Martha's eyes widen upon seeing and hearing this. The words... They were the same words uttered by his parents 17 years ago.

"He would be free! He would bring about freedom for us!" Were their last words.

After hearing those words, Martha finally gives in. She allows Spade to do whatever he wants to. Because now she has realised, that this young man holds the potential to be the king!
