Chapter 17 - Shadows of Inequality

As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the town, Lucas led us through the bustling streets. I couldn't help but notice the stark contrast between the opulent buildings of the wealthy and the modest dwellings of the less fortunate. The town seemed to be divided into distinct sections, each representing a different facet of society.

Lucas turned to us, his eyes filled with a mix of weariness and determination. "You see, Damon, Cassandra, this town may appear ordinary on the surface, but it harbors a dark underbelly," he said, his voice tinged with a hint of sadness. "It is a haven for criminals and outcasts, a place where lawlessness thrives in the shadows."

Cassandra nodded, her expression solemn. "That explains the corruption we witnessed among the guards," she replied. "But what about the personal guards and hunters? How do they fit into this equation?"

Lucas sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly. "The personal guards and hunters provided by the adventurers guild are a necessary means of protection," he explained. "Due to the high concentration of criminals, it is essential for the safety of the wealthy and influential individuals. They pay a hefty price for this service, ensuring their own security while the rest of the town struggles to survive."

A sense of unease settled within me as I absorbed Lucas's words. The town, once seen as a beacon of hope, now appeared tarnished by greed and inequality. I couldn't help but feel a surge of anger rise within me, fueled by the injustice that plagued this place.

"And what about you, Lucas?" I asked, my voice filled with genuine concern. "You mentioned that you come from a poor background. How did you end up as a personal guard?"

A bittersweet smile crossed Lucas's face. "I was given an opportunity," he replied. "I trained tirelessly, honing my skills as a hunter. The adventurers guild recognized my potential and offered me this position. It was a chance to rise above the circumstances of my birth, to provide for my family and protect those in need."

Cassandra placed a hand on Lucas's shoulder, her eyes reflecting empathy. "You've shown great strength and resilience," she said, her voice filled with admiration. "You've become a beacon of hope for others, standing up against the darkness that engulfs this town."

Lucas's gaze met mine, a glimmer of determination in his eyes. "Together, we can make a difference," he said firmly. "We must expose the corruption that plagues the guards and bring justice to this town. But it won't be easy. We'll face formidable challenges and dangerous adversaries."

I nodded, a renewed sense of purpose coursing through my veins. "We can't turn a blind eye to the suffering of the innocent," I declared. "We'll fight for justice, no matter the cost."

As the night enveloped the town, we knew that our journey had only just begun. The path ahead was treacherous, but with Lucas by our side, we had gained a valuable ally—one who understood the intricacies of this town and the darkness that lurked within.
