The sudden turn of events didn't apply to Marius who had sensed the ruckus and was coming down the stairs to see what was disrupting his moment of quiescence. He was trying to calculate how much power he had gained over the past years, and how many more he needed to gain in order to return to the underworld when the noises from downstairs kept interrupting his time to think.
He had specifically come down the stairs so he could kill the buffoon that was creating an uproar in his fortress.
